STARVIS means you can see very dim stars in real time video. The QHY5III290 can capture magnitude 9 stars with a 50mm F/1.4 C-mount lens. Compared to the IMX236 sensor, for example, the IMX290 has twice sensitivity for visible light and three or more times the sensitivity in near infrared. The QHY5III290 also has ultra low read noise. The back-illumination and low read noise make this camera an ideal video astronomy camera. The small 2.9um pixel size is also ideal for planetary imaging. The QHY5III290 has a fast USB 3.0 interface and produces 135FPS at full HD output . The camera has 10/12-bit ADC and it outputs an 8-bit or 12-bit image. They can be used in a standard 1.25-inch eyepiece holder and have an adjustable location ring for confocality with an eyepiece. All QHY5III series cameras come in a very small but powerful package!

The QHY5III174 is the first in the new QHY5III series CMOS USB 3.0 cameras. The camera is designed to be an excellent planetary, lunar, solar and meteor capture video camera. With a 50mm, F/1.4 C-mount lens it will record 8th to 9th magnitude stars at 30 frames per second (33 ms exposure). This high sensitivity with HD resolution will push video astronomy to new heights. Sony introduced a new global shutter (GS) CMOS imaging technology called PregiusTM that redefines the global shutter imaging category and provides the best of both worlds: fast frame rates and CCD-like imaging performance. The technology also offers reduced dark noise, which enables higher gains without compromising image quality, as well as higher quantum efficiency. The global shutter eliminates pixelization when imaging the moon and planets and moon caused by atmospheric agitation and high frame rates.

The unique QHYCCD design retains the 1.25-inch eyepiece design of the QHY5-II series but adds features for better cooling. This design is more efficient in transfer of heat to the outer case enabling lower noise especially in high ambient temperatures. The 1.25 inch design also offers the shortest possible backfocus, making the camera ideal for off-axis guiding. In addition, the QHY5III174 uses a more robust LEMO style connector for the guide port. These connectors are known for being both rugged and reliable. The QHY5III174 is available in both mono and color versions. The camera is well suited for solar imaging using short focal length telescopes that will capture a full solar disk within the FOV.

<p high-resolution solar, lunar, and planetary imaging. Its 2.3 Megapixel sensor with large 5.86μm pixels captures data at a blistering 138 FPS over USB 3.0, freezing moments of atmospheric stability. With a deep 32ke- full well capacity and read noise as low as 2.2e-, the QHY5III174M pulls fine detail from both bright planetary disks and faint solar prominences.

Global Shutter Imaging: The 1/1.2-inch Sony IMX174

The core of the QHY5III174M is its Sony IMX174 sensor, which features an electronic global shutter. Unlike rolling shutters that can distort fast-moving targets or warp images under turbulent seeing, a global shutter exposes all 2.3 million pixels simultaneously. This completely eliminates motion artifacts, ensuring that planetary features and delicate solar granulation are captured without skew, even at high frame rates.

The sensor's large 1/1.2-inch format provides a generous field of view for framing the entire solar or lunar disk with shorter focal length telescopes. The 5.86μm pixels offer a good balance of resolution and sensitivity, making them an excellent match for common f/7 to f/10 systems like SCTs and Maksutov-Cassegrains without requiring aggressive barlows.

138 FPS Planetary and Solar Performance

To capture moments of perfect seeing, speed is essential. The QHY5III174M delivers a full-resolution frame rate of 138 FPS at 8-bit, enabled by its high-speed USB 3.0 interface. This allows you to acquire thousands of frames in a short period, maximizing your chances of catching sharp data for stacking and processing.

For even higher speeds when targeting specific features like Jupiter's Great Red Spot or a solar flare, Region of Interest (ROI) can be used. At a 960x600 resolution, the frame rate increases to 262 FPS, and at 480x300, it reaches an incredible 490 FPS. It remains a very capable camera for capturing planets in visible light.

However, the QHY5III462C's IMX462 sensor introduces two critical advancements. First, the sHCG mode delivers significantly lower read noise (0.5e-) at the high gain settings used for planetary work. Second, and most decisively, the 462C's radically enhanced NIR sensitivity makes it a superior instrument for scientific imaging, especially in the methane band. For imagers wanting to explore atmospheric details on the gas giants, the QHY5III462C is the definitive choice.

How does the QHY5III462C's NIR sensitivity help when imaging Jupiter?

Jupiter's atmosphere has a strong absorption band around 880nm due to methane gas.
