102mm Maksutov-Cassegrain Optics: High-Contrast Planetary Views at f/13

The Maksutov-Cassegrain (MAK) design uses both a mirror and a corrector lens to produce sharp, high-contrast images that are virtually free of chromatic aberration. The Astro Fi 102mm's long f/13 focal ratio excels at resolving fine details, from craters on the Moon to the rings of Saturn and Jupiter's cloud bands. A key benefit of the MAK design is its stability; the secondary mirror is a reflective spot on the inside of the corrector, eliminating the need for periodic collimation.

This design's secondary obstruction is just 34% by diameter, smaller than many other catadioptric designs, which enhances contrast for planetary observation. The only trade-off for this optical precision is a longer thermal acclimation time, as the thick corrector plate needs time to adjust to the ambient nighttime temperature for the sharpest possible views.
