  • Celestron PowerTank Lithium

The Celestron PowerTank Lithium delivers 84.4 Wh of stable power in a compact 2.25 lb package, designed specifically for running computerized telescope mounts through a full night of observing. Its dedicated 12VDC, 3000mA port powers any Celestron computerized mount for hours, while two USB ports (1000mA and 2100mA) simultaneously charge your phone and tablet. Built around advanced LiFePO4 chemistry, it recharges from flat in just 4 hours and is rated for an incredible 2000 charge cycles, ensuring reliable power for years of astronomy.

    LiFePO4 Chemistry: 2000 Cycles and a 10-Year Shelf Life

The core of the PowerTank Lithium is its Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, a chemistry that vastly outperforms standard lithium-ion or sealed lead-acid (SLA) designs. The LiFePO4 battery can be charged and discharged 2000 times, compared to just 500 cycles for typical lithium-ion or 300 for SLA, meaning it will last as long as your telescope. It also holds its charge for up to 10 years without use, so it's ready to go when you are.

This chemistry is also fundamentally safer. It uses phosphates instead of environmentally hazardous cobalt or lead and is thermally stable, withstanding higher temperatures without the fire danger associated with punctured lithium-ion cells. This makes the PowerTank Lithium a safer, longer-lasting, and more environmentally friendly power source.

84.4 Wh Capacity for Telescopes and USB Devices

With an 84.4 Wh capacity, the PowerTank Lithium provides enough energy to run a typical computerized mount for an entire night. The primary 12VDC port delivers up to 3000mA, sufficient for even the most demanding GoTo slews. A 6.5 ft (2 m) power cord compatible with all Celestron computerized telescopes is included.

In addition to powering your mount, the PowerTank Lithium serves as a field charging station for your personal electronics. It includes two USB ports: a standard 1000mA port for phones and a high-current 2100mA port for rapidly charging tablets or other power-hungry devices. When the night is over, the entire unit recharges in just 4 hours with the included AC charger.

IP-65 Rated for Operation from -4°F to 140°F

Engineered for the realities of field astronomy, the PowerTank Lithium is built to withstand the elements. It carries an IP-65 rating, signifying it is fully sealed against dust ingress and protected from low-pressure water jets, so you don't have to worry about dew or a sudden light shower. The unit's rugged construction is matched by its extreme environmental tolerance.

The LiFePO4 battery chemistry allows for a massive operating temperature range of -4°F to 140°F, ensuring reliable power on frigid winter nights when other batteries would fail. For convenience, it features a built-in LED light panel with both red and white light options at two brightness levels, and a 2" wide strap secures the 2.25 lbs unit firmly to your tripod leg.

  • How long can the Celestron PowerTank Lithium power my telescope?

With its 84.4 Wh capacity, the PowerTank Lithium can power most Celestron computerized mounts for a full night of typical use (tracking and occasional GoTo slewing). The exact duration will vary based on the mount's power draw and how actively you are slewing the telescope.

Will the PowerTank Lithium work on a cold night for imaging the Orion Nebula (M42) with my Advanced VX mount?

Absolutely. The PowerTank Lithium is ideal for cold-weather astrophotography. Its LiFePO4 battery is rated to operate down to -4°F (-20°C), a temperature at which many standard lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries would lose significant capacity or fail completely. It is fully compatible with your Advanced VX mount.

What makes the LiFePO4 battery in the PowerTank Lithium better than other power packs?

The Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry has three major advantages:

    • Longevity: It is rated for 2000 charge/discharge cycles and has a 10-year unrecharged shelf life, far exceeding other battery types.
    • Safety: It is more thermally stable, not prone to runaway if punctured, and doesn't use environmentally hazardous materials like cobalt or lead.
    • Durability: It maintains performance over a much wider temperature range, especially in the cold.

Can I charge my phone and run my NexStar SE telescope at the same time with the PowerTank Lithium?

Yes. The PowerTank Lithium is designed for simultaneous use. You can connect your NexStar SE to the 12VDC telescope power port while using either of the two USB ports (5VDC @ 1000mA or 2100mA) to charge your smartphone, tablet, or another USB-powered device.

I have a SkyProdigy mount; is the PowerTank Lithium compatible and what cable do I need?

Yes, the PowerTank Lithium is compatible with all Celestron computerized mounts, including the SkyProdigy series. The box includes a 6.5 ft (2 m) telescope power cord with the correct connector for your mount, so you don't need to purchase any additional cables.

Why might the PowerTank Lithium shut off while I'm using it to power a very low-draw accessory?

The PowerTank Lithium has a built-in power-saving feature. If the 12V port detects a current draw of less than 250mA for an extended period, it will automatically shut off to conserve the battery. This is typically not an issue with telescope mounts but may occur if powering a very small, low-current accessory by itself.
