  • Solar / Eclipse Viewer AstroSolar® Silver/Gold

The Baader Planetarium Solar / Eclipse Viewer AstroSolar® Silver/Gold provides CE-certified, safe protection for direct, naked-eye observation of the Sun. Engineered with Baader's renowned AstroSolar® film, these viewers are the definitive solution for watching the partial phases of a solar eclipse or tracking large sunspot groups, and are available individually or in packs of 10, 25 and 100 pieces for families, schools, clubs, and retailers.

Safely Observe Partial Eclipses and Sunspots

These viewers are designed for one purpose: to let you look directly at the Sun with your own eyes, safely. During a solar eclipse, you can follow the entire event as the Moon slowly covers the Sun, from first contact to the final moments before totality. Between eclipses, the viewers are sharp enough to reveal large, complex sunspots without any magnification, and the graphics printed on the viewers illustrate solar phenomena, making them an educational tool for groups.

AstroSolar Silver/Gold Film: The Baader Planetarium Difference

Unlike many eclipse glasses that use black polymer, Baader uses their own German-made AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film. This material is a double-sided, metal-coated film that provides a perfectly sharp and clear image of the Sun, free from the double images or internal reflections common in lesser, laminated materials. The result is a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing view of the Sun in its natural, neutral color.

AstroSolar Silver/Gold vs. Black Polymer Films

The primary advantage of Baader's AstroSolar® film lies in its construction. Black polymer films absorb solar energy, while the reflective metallic layers on AstroSolar film block harmful infrared radiation much more effectively. This reflective property keeps your eyes cooler and more comfortable during observation.

    • Image Sharpness: The non-laminated, double-coated AstroSolar film produces a significantly sharper image compared to layered polymer films, which can create soft or ghosted images.
    • Color Rendition: Instead of an unnatural orange or red-tinted view, the Silver/Gold film presents the Sun in a neutral white, allowing for a more authentic visual experience.
    • Scratch Resistance: The film is engineered to be more resistant to damage from normal handling than telescope-grade solar film, ensuring greater durability in group settings and for its intended use.

Critical Safety Warning: For Direct Visual Use Only

These Solar Viewers are strictly for use with your unaided eyes. Never attempt to use them in front of a telescope, a pair of binoculars, a camera lens, or any other optical device. Concentrated sunlight from an objective lens will destroy the filter instantly and cause permanent, irreversible eye damage or blindness. For safe magnified solar viewing, you must use a dedicated solar filter designed to cover the front aperture of your instrument.

  • When should I use the Baader Solar Viewer during a solar eclipse?

You must use the Baader Solar Viewer for all partial phases of a solar eclipse—that is, any time any part of the Sun's bright surface (the photosphere) is visible. It is only safe to remove the viewer during the brief moments of 100% totality, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun. The instant the Sun begins to reappear, you must put the viewer back on.

Which pack size of Baader Solar Viewers should I choose?

A single viewer is ideal for personal use. The 10-pack and 25-pack are convenient, economical ways to equip families, school classes, astronomy clubs, or workplace events with the same certified protection. The 100-piece pack is intended for larger organizations, outreach events, and retailers: its box converts into a counter display, making it easy to hand out or sell the viewers individually.

Is it safe to use the Baader Solar Viewer with my binoculars or telescope?

Absolutely not. This is extremely dangerous. The Baader Solar Viewer is only safe for direct, naked-eye use. Holding it in front of an unfiltered telescope, binocular, or camera will concentrate sunlight, instantly burn through the film, and cause permanent blindness. You must use a full-aperture solar filter that fits securely over the front of your instrument for magnified viewing.

Why does the sun look white with the Baader Solar Viewer instead of orange?

The AstroSolar® Silver/Gold film is designed for color neutrality to show the Sun as it truly is—a white star. Many other solar viewers use dyed orange or red plastic, which can obscure subtle details and does not represent the Sun's natural color. The neutral view from the Baader viewer is preferred by many observers for its authenticity.

How is the AstroSolar Silver/Gold film different from cheap black plastic solar viewers?

The AstroSolar film is a highly engineered, double-sided metal-coated sheet that provides superior sharpness and IR rejection compared to common black polymer films. This results in a clearer, safer, and more comfortable view. Black polymer is an absorptive filter, while AstroSolar is primarily a reflective filter.

Can I reuse my Baader Solar Viewer for the next eclipse?

Yes, provided it has been stored safely and the film is in perfect condition. Before every use, inspect the film surfaces by holding the viewer up to a bright indoor light. If you see any pinholes, scratches, or tears, discard the viewer immediately. Any damage compromises its safety.
