What batteries does the Explore Scientific Illuminator use?

The Explore Scientific Finder Scope Illuminator requires two (2) LR41 batteries for operation. Please note that batteries are not included with this replacement part and must be purchased separately.

Is this illuminator compatible with my Explore Scientific 8x50 Right-Angle Finder?

Yes, this illuminator is designed as a direct replacement for the one included with Explore Scientific's 50mm finder scopes, including straight-through and right-angle models. Its 17.5mm diameter barrel and threading are made to factory specifications for a perfect fit.

Why is the light red on the Explore Scientific Finder Scope Illuminator?

The human eye's rod cells, which are responsible for night vision, are less sensitive to red light. Using a deep red LED to illuminate the crosshairs allows you to see the reticle clearly while minimizing the impact on your dark adaptation, keeping your eyes sensitive to faint celestial objects.

How does variable brightness help when observing faint objects like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)?

When aiming at a large, faint object like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), a bright reticle can overwhelm the target, making it hard to see. The variable control lets you dim the crosshairs to the bare minimum visibility, so they appear as a faint guide without washing out the galaxy's subtle dust lanes and extended halo.

Is this an upgrade or a direct replacement part?

This is a direct, like-for-like replacement for the original illuminator that came with your Explore Scientific finder scope. It offers the same variable red illumination and is not considered an upgrade. It is intended to replace a lost or non-functional unit.

How do I install the Explore Scientific Illuminator?

Installation is straightforward. Simply unscrew the old or broken illuminator from the port on your finder scope body and thread the new one in its place. Be sure to install two LR41 batteries (not included) before attaching it to the finder.
