What is the purpose of the Explore Scientific Saddle Plate for the ED80mm?

This saddle plate serves as the primary connection point between your Explore Scientific ED80mm or TED80mm optical tube and a mount equipped with a Vixen-style saddle. It is essential for ensuring the stability and safety of your telescope system.

Is this saddle plate compatible with Losmandy-style mounts?

No, this is a Vixen-style saddle plate. It is designed to fit into the smaller, V-shaped saddles common on many popular mounts. It will not fit in a wider Losmandy-style D-plate saddle without an adapter.

What does the stand-off block on the ED80/TED80 saddle plate do?

The included stand-off block provides extra clearance between the telescope tube and the saddle plate. This is specifically designed to allow the focuser assembly to rotate freely, which is critical for framing celestial objects when imaging.

What material is the Explore Scientific ED80/TED80 saddle plate made from?

The plate is machined from a single, solid piece of extruded aluminum. It features a black anodized finish for durability and corrosion resistance.

I'm trying to mount my ED80mm refractor on an Explore Scientific iEXOS-100. Is this the correct plate?

Yes. The iEXOS-100 mount uses a Vixen-style saddle, and this plate is the specific Vixen-style plate designed for the ED80mm telescope. It is the correct component for attaching your scope to that mount.

Will this plate provide enough stability for my ED80mm when I add a camera for imaging the Orion Nebula (M42)?

Absolutely. The plate is made from rigid, extruded aluminum and is designed to securely hold the ED80mm and its typical imaging payload. When properly attached and balanced on a suitable mount, it will provide a stable foundation for long-exposure astrophotography of targets like the Orion Nebula (M42).
