  • RB Focus eXcalibur 4.0 Motorized Flat Panel

The RB Focus eXcalibur 4.0 Motorized Flat Panel automates your flat frames and keeps your optics covered. A compact servo motor unit opens and closes a neon LED panel with 12-bit control across 4096 brightness levels, and built-in Wi-Fi with ASCOM Alpaca lets you run it completely wirelessly. It runs on 12V, weighs 186 g (varying with the panel size ordered) and is made to order in sizes from 80 mm to 460 mm.

eXcalibur 4.0: Automated Flats for Scopes from 80 mm to 460 mm

The eXcalibur 4.0 transforms the tedious task of capturing flat frames into a fully automated, repeatable process integrated directly into your imaging sequence. It combines a motorized dust cover and a high-quality flat field panel into a single device, allowing you to end an imaging session, cover your telescope, and acquire calibration frames with minimal user intervention.

Sunlight-Spectrum Panel: 12-bit Control Over 4096 Brightness Levels

At the heart of the system is a neon LED panel calibrated to the spectrum of sunlight, providing a neutral and homogenous light source for accurate flat frames. Its 12-bit brightness control provides 4096 levels, giving you precise control to hit your target ADU with any combination of camera, filter, and exposure time. This level of precision is critical for creating consistent flats, especially with fast optical systems.

Dual-Arm Servo Motor and Optics Protection

The compact, light motor unit is designed to fit telescopes of different sizes more easily, including small ones where space and weight matter. A powerful servo motor drives a dual-arm system that gives the rigidity to hold the panel and work reliably on portable rigs, permanent setups and remote observatories alike. Between flats, the closed panel keeps your optics protected.

    Integrated Dew Heater

A built-in heater helps prevent dew from forming and keeps the panel working even during long sessions in demanding conditions.

ASCOM Alpaca & Wi-Fi: Cable-Free Control from Any Browser

With built-in Wi-Fi and native ASCOM Alpaca support, the eXcalibur 4.0 eliminates the need for a physical USB cable running to your telescope. You can control the device wirelessly over your network from any Alpaca-compatible imaging software. For even simpler operation, a built-in web interface allows you to open/close the cover and adjust brightness directly from a browser on a computer, tablet or iPad without installing a control app.

N.I.N.A. Integration: Dynamic Brightness Control in the Advanced Sequencer

The eXcalibur 4.0 is designed for deep integration with popular capture software like N.I.N.A. (Nighttime Imaging 'N' Astronomy). You can define specific brightness levels for each of your filters and incorporate the flat-capturing process directly into the Advanced Sequencer. This allows your system to automatically switch filters, set the corresponding panel brightness, and capture a full set of calibration frames as the final step of your imaging plan.

Made-to-Order Sizing: Carbon Fiber & Aluminum Construction

The eXcalibur 4.0 is built from carbon fiber, aluminum and engineering plastics, combining low weight with strength. Each size is made to order; choose the diameter of your dew shield or telescope opening, from 80 mm to 460 mm. A redesigned, simplified mounting system makes fitting and removing it easier.

12V Power, USB-C and 2.1 mm DC Jack

The eXcalibur 4.0 runs on 12V. Its connections are a 2.1 mm DC jack (center positive) and a USB-C port.

  • What is the RB Focus eXcalibur 4.0 Motorized Flat Panel?

The eXcalibur 4.0 is a 2-in-1 device that serves as both a high-quality flat field illumination panel and a motorized, automated dust cover for your telescope. It allows you to remotely cover your optics and take calibration flat frames without being physically present at the telescope.

How do I control the RB Focus eXcalibur 4.0?

Wirelessly over Wi-Fi, from ASCOM Alpaca compatible software such as N.I.N.A., without a USB cable to the capture computer. You can also open its built-in web interface from a browser on a computer, tablet or iPad to open or close the panel and set the brightness.

I use N.I.N.A. with LRGB and narrowband filters. How does the eXcalibur 4.0 handle different filter factors?

The eXcalibur 4.0's deep integration with N.I.N.A. allows for dynamic brightness adjustment. You can pre-configure a specific brightness level (from 0 to 4095) for each filter in your sequence. When the N.I.N.A. sequencer moves to capture flats for your Ha filter, for example, it will automatically command the panel to the exact brightness you defined for that filter, so each filter gets the brightness you set.

What size eXcalibur 4.0 should I order?

Each variant is the diameter of the dew shield or telescope opening the panel is made for, from 80 mm to 460 mm. Measure your dew shield or tube opening and choose the matching size; ask us if you are unsure.

What kind of light source does the eXcalibur 4.0 panel use?

A neon LED panel calibrated to the spectrum of sunlight, which RB Focus says gives natural, even illumination for flat frames.

Do I need a separate dew heater for the eXcalibur 4.0 panel itself?

No. The eXcalibur 4.0 has a built-in heater that helps prevent dew and keeps the panel working through long sessions.

How is the eXcalibur 4.0 powered?

It runs on 12V. Its connections are a 2.1 mm center-positive DC jack and a USB-C port.

Does the weight of the eXcalibur 4.0 change with the panel size?

Yes. RB Focus gives 186 g and says the weight varies with the size of the flat field panel ordered.

Can I use the eXcalibur 4.0 with software other than N.I.N.A.?

It works with applications that support ASCOM Alpaca over the network. RB Focus names N.I.N.A.; check that your program supports Alpaca cover calibrator devices.

Is the RB Focus eXcalibur 4.0 difficult to install on a telescope?

The eXcalibur 4.0 features a simplified mounting system designed for easy installation and removal. Since each unit is made to order based on your telescope's diameter, it provides a secure fit without complex adjustments.
