  • Sky-Watcher Esprit 150 EDX Super APO Triplet f/7 Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Esprit 150 EDX combines a 150mm air-spaced triplet objective and a 1050mm focal length into a formidable f/7 imaging instrument. Its optical system achieves a Dawes resolution of 0.77 arc seconds and gathers 459 times more light than the human eye, reaching a limiting stellar magnitude of 13.4. For astrophotographers, the Esprit 150 EDX delivers a fully illuminated 44mm image circle with its optional dedicated field flattener, while its 3" CNC-machined 1:11 dual-speed focuser has a locking lever to secure heavy imaging loads.

150mm f/7 Triplet APO with Ohara FPL-53 Glass

At the heart of the Esprit 150 EDX is a three-element, air-spaced objective lens featuring an Ohara FPL-53 ED glass element. This apochromatic design corrects false color extremely well, with zero color fringing even on bright objects, yielding exceptional contrast and sharpness. Fully multi-coated optics with metallic high-transmission lens coatings and a knife-edge baffled optical system maximize light throughput and suppress stray light.

The 150mm aperture resolves down to 0.77 arc seconds (Dawes), giving you the power to split tight double stars and discern fine detail in planetary cloud bands and lunar rilles. With a highest useful magnification of 354x, this telescope delivers uncompromising visual observations when conditions permit.

    A 44mm Full-Frame Corrected Image Circle

Designed for the dedicated astrophotographer, the Esprit 150 EDX is engineered to illuminate full-frame sensors. When paired with the optional ESPRIT 150 field flattener, designed specifically for this telescope, it gives excellent field flatness and full illumination with extremely minimized color fringing across the entire 44mm imaging plane. The flattener is not compatible with other telescopes, even refractors with the same aperture and focal length.

The optional imaging train is precisely defined: the flattener requires 100mm of back focus from its last lens element to the sensor. A 48mm (2") filter, such as a light pollution filter, can be mounted in the M48 x 0.75 thread inside the DSLR extender tube.

3" Dual-Speed Focuser with >170mm of Back Focus

The Esprit 150 EDX is equipped with a 3" CNC-machined linear power focuser that provides smooth, rock-solid focusing with zero image shift. A 1:11 dual-speed mechanism allows coarse adjustment and fine-tuning for critical focus. The whole focuser body can be rotated when the knobs are not in a convenient position, the diagonal ring rotates independently, an indexed scale on the drawtube shows the focus position for each accessory, and a locking lever below the focuser secures heavy loads.

For visual observers, the system offers more than 170mm of back focus from the end of the focuser tube with the 2" adapter installed. The telescope is supplied without eyepiece, star diagonal and finderscope.

Included Hardware: D-Style Plate, Tube Rings, and Aluminum Case

This telescope arrives ready for a substantial mount. The package includes a pair of tube rings on a 3" D-style (Losmandy) dovetail bar, plus a carry handle for handling the 15 kg (33.1 lb) optical tube.

A retractable dew cap shields the objective from moisture and blocks stray light, improving contrast. For transport and storage, the Esprit 150 EDX comes in a padded, foam-lined aluminum hard case. With the dew shield fully retracted, an M158 x 1.5 thread at the front of the objective cell accepts accessories such as a front-mounted filter.

  • What kind of mount is required for the Sky-Watcher Esprit 150 EDX?

The optical tube weighs 15 kg (33.1 lb) and is 92 cm (36 in) long with the dew cap retracted, so it needs a sturdy equatorial mount. Choose one whose payload rating comfortably exceeds the tube plus your camera and accessories.

How do I attach a full-frame camera to the Esprit 150 and achieve a flat field?

For a flat, fully illuminated 44mm field, use the optional ESPRIT 150 field flattener (sold separately), designed only for this telescope. The distance from its last lens to the sensor must be exactly 100mm. Sky-Watcher DSLR rings with an enlarged 48mm T-ring for your camera give this spacing; for astronomy CCD/CMOS cameras, a custom coupling ring with a female M62 x 1 thread places the sensor 95mm from the flattener's lens mount edge.

Does the Esprit 150 EDX come with a finderscope or diagonal?

No. The Esprit 150 EDX is supplied as an optical tube assembly with its core mounting hardware (rings, dovetail) and case. A finderscope, star diagonal, and eyepieces are not included. This allows discerning astronomers to select high-end accessories that match the optical quality of the telescope.

Is the Esprit 150 EDX suitable for high-magnification planetary viewing of Jupiter?

Absolutely. The apochromatic triplet objective provides extremely high contrast with no distracting color fringing. With its 1050mm focal length, a quality high-power eyepiece can easily push the telescope towards its highest useful magnification of 354x, revealing fine details in Jupiter's cloud bands, the Great Red Spot, and transits of its moons.

What is the purpose of the M158 x 1.5 thread on the Esprit 150's front lens cell?

The M158 x 1.5 thread is at the front of the objective cell, under the retractable dew cap. When the dew shield is fully retracted, it can be used to attach accessories such as a front-mounted filter.
