Cases and Covers

Most equipment damage in astronomy happens in transit and in storage, not on the sky. A telescope that survives a season of tailgate transport without a case will eventually lose collimation or gain a scratch, and a tube left uncovered outdoors collects moisture that takes far longer to clear than it took to form. David Astro carries cases and covers in Canada, shipping from Canadian stock.

Fit matters more than material. Tell us what you are protecting and how it travels, and we will recommend the right level of protection.

Protecting Equipment in Transit and Storage

The right protection depends on whether the threat is impact, moisture, dust or ultraviolet degradation — and these need different answers.

  • Hard cases with custom foam: Impact and crush protection for optical tubes, mount heads and camera trains, with foam cut so components cannot shift during transport.
  • Eyepiece and accessory cases: Compartmented storage that keeps small, expensive items organized and stops eyepieces contacting each other in a bag.
  • Telescope covers: Weatherproof outdoor covers for permanently mounted equipment, with UV-resistant and reflective materials that limit daytime heat buildup.
  • Soft cases and padded bags: Lighter protection for tubes that travel by car and are handled carefully, with far less weight and bulk than a hard case.
  • Mount and tripod bags: Purpose-shaped carriers for awkward heavy items, which is often the difference between a two-trip and a one-trip setup.
  • Desiccant and moisture control: Rechargeable desiccant packs for stored cases, which is what actually prevents fungus on optical coatings in a damp basement.

Why Choose David Astro for Cases and Covers

A case that nearly fits is worse than no case, because it lets equipment move under impact.

  • Fit confirmed against your equipment: We check dimensions against your specific tube, mount head or camera train rather than a nominal category size.
  • Canadian storage conditions considered: We advise on desiccant and ventilation for equipment stored in unheated garages and basements, where condensation cycling is the real threat.
  • Outdoor cover selection: For permanently mounted setups we recommend covers that shed water and resist UV, since a cover that traps moisture is worse than none.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, stocked in Canada and shipped worldwide.
  • Ships from Canada: Bulky items shipped domestically without duties or brokerage charges.

Cases and Covers in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a hard case or is soft enough?
Soft is adequate for careful car transport over short distances. Hard cases are worth it if equipment travels frequently, flies, or shares space with anything that can shift.
Can I leave my telescope outside under a cover?
For a permanently mounted setup, yes, with a proper weatherproof cover and desiccant inside the tube's dust cap. Expect to check for condensation regularly, especially through spring and autumn temperature swings.
How do I stop fungus on my optics?
Store in a dry, ventilated place rather than sealed with trapped humidity, and use rechargeable desiccant in cases. Fungus grows on coatings in warm, damp, still air, which is exactly what a sealed case in a basement provides.
Will you check fit before I order?
Yes. Send us your equipment's dimensions or model and we will confirm the case fits before it ships from our Canadian warehouse.
