Solar Telescopes

A dedicated solar telescope shows a star in motion. Prominences arc off the limb and change shape within an hour, filaments snake across the disc, and active regions reorganize between one afternoon and the next — all visible in daylight, from a city, without waiting for dark. David Astro carries solar telescopes in Canada, in stock and shipped from our Canadian warehouse.

Aperture, blocking filter size and whether you plan to observe or image all shape the right choice. Tell us your intentions and we will specify accordingly.

Dedicated Solar Instruments

A hydrogen-alpha telescope is not a normal telescope with a filter. The etalon, the blocking filter and the optics are designed together for a single wavelength.

  • Hydrogen-alpha telescopes: Complete instruments isolating the 656.28 nm line to a fraction of an angstrom, revealing chromospheric detail invisible in white light.
  • Aperture and resolution: Larger apertures resolve finer filament and prominence structure, though daytime seeing frequently limits what is achievable regardless.
  • Blocking filter size: Determines usable field. Smaller blocking filters suit visual use and small sensors; full-disc imaging with a large sensor needs a larger one.
  • Tuning mechanisms: Tilt or pressure tuning shifts the passband slightly, letting you optimize for surface detail or limb prominences during a session.
  • Double-stacking: A second etalon narrows the band further, greatly increasing surface contrast at the cost of brightness and price.
  • Calcium-K instruments: Filters at 393 nm showing the plage network, essentially an imaging wavelength since human eyes respond poorly there.

Why Choose David Astro for Solar Telescopes

This is a category where specification errors are expensive and safety errors are worse.

  • Blocking filter sized to your camera: If full-disc imaging is the goal, the blocking filter must pass the whole field. We check this against your sensor before you order.
  • Visual versus imaging guidance: The best visual instrument and the best imaging instrument are not always the same, and we will explain the difference for your budget.
  • Genuine equipment only: As an authorized dealer we supply manufacturer product with full warranty, which is a safety matter in solar equipment.
  • Canadian stock: Ships from Canada with no duties or brokerage fees for Canadian orders.
  • Inspection and service: In-house checks on blocking filters and etalon condition, and support with tuning.

Solar Telescopes in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

How small a solar telescope is worthwhile?
Even a 40 to 50 mm hydrogen-alpha telescope shows prominences and major filaments clearly, and its full-disc view is excellent. Larger apertures add fine surface detail when seeing allows.
Can I image the full disc?
Only if the blocking filter and the telescope's focal length suit your sensor size. Tell us your camera and we will confirm whether full disc fits or whether you will be mosaicking.
Is daytime seeing a problem?
Often the limiting factor. Ground heating creates turbulence, so observing over grass rather than pavement and earlier in the day usually gives noticeably better results.
Do these need a special mount?
Any stable tracking mount works, and tracking is very helpful at higher magnification. Alt-azimuth is entirely adequate for visual solar observing since field rotation does not matter.

Observing the active Sun?

Tell us whether you will observe or image and we will specify aperture and blocking filter. In stock and shipping from Canada.
