Which MaxDome II kit do I need for my observatory?
Your choice depends on your needs. For a standard observatory dome, the Rotation and Shutter Kit provides complete control. If you only need to automate dome rotation, select the Rotation Only Kit. For a roll-off roof observatory, the Shutter Only Kit is the correct choice, as it is designed to control the roof's opening and closing mechanism.
Can the MaxDome II control my dome's existing AC motor?
While the MaxDome II directly drives 12 VDC motors up to 5 A, it cannot power an AC motor directly. However, it can control AC motors or high-current DC motors by using its output to trigger external relays. Diffraction Limited provides suggested relay circuits for AC motors and for DC motors over 5 A or not working at 12 V; installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.
How is the shutter controller on the MaxDome II powered?
The shutter controller board, which rotates with the dome, is powered by a battery (not included). This battery can be solar charged, or charged by the optional MaxDome Charging System, a wireless charger designed for the MaxDome II (it requires firmware 11 and drivers 3.00 or higher).
How does the MaxDome II integrate with a Boltwood Cloud Sensor for safety?
The MaxDome II features auxiliary auto-close inputs specifically designed for devices like the Boltwood Cloud Sensor. When the sensor detects unsafe conditions (like rain or heavy clouds), it sends a signal to the MaxDome II, which automatically closes the dome. Separately, safety interlocks automatically close the dome if data from the PC is lost.
I have a Sirius Observatories dome. Is the MaxDome II a direct fit?
Yes, the MaxDome II is directly compatible with Sirius Observatories domes.
What software is compatible with the MaxDome II for dome slaving?
The MaxDome II supports the industry-standard ASCOM platform, allowing any ASCOM-compliant software to slave the dome to the telescope's position. Drivers are also available for INDI (for Linux-based systems) and TheSkyX.
How does the wireless shutter control work on the MaxDome II?
The system uses a wireless inductive link to transmit data between the main controller board and the shutter board on the rotating dome. This eliminates the need for sliding electrical contacts, which are clumsy and trouble-prone, while providing constant communication for full control and status monitoring.
