What makes the NexStar Evolution 9.25's internal battery special?
The built-in 9.6V, 4.5Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is a first on a consumer telescope, and runs up to 10 hours on a single charge. It has protection against overcharging, overdischarging and overheating, and it should last thousands of charge cycles with reasonable care. Charge it fully when you receive the telescope, use only the included power supply or a certified 12VDC supply of at least 2 amps, do not leave it discharged or low for long, and charge it every 3 to 6 months. An intelligent power management system goes into power-saving mode when the battery is low.
How does the WiFi control work on the NexStar Evolution 9.25?
The telescope generates its own wireless network. You connect your smartphone or tablet directly to this network (no internet or router is required). Then, you open the free Celestron SkyPortal app, which functions as a graphical planetarium interface. Tap any object on the screen, and the telescope's GoTo system will automatically slew to and track it.
Can I use the NexStar Evolution 9.25 for serious astrophotography?
The 9.25-inch Evolution is an excellent way to get started: you can capture deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula by simply attaching a DSLR camera. As you progress, the Celestron Pro HD Wedge, sold separately, allows longer exposures. Polar aligned on a wedge, the EQ North or EQ South alignment makes the telescope track equatorially, moving in one direction so the object stays centered without rotating, which is suitable for astroimaging. There is no autoguide port and no periodic error correction.
What alignment methods are available for the NexStar Evolution 9.25?
The NexStar Evolution 9.25 supports a variety of alignment procedures to suit any situation. These can be initiated from the SkyPortal app or the NexStar+ hand control. Supported methods include:
-
SkyAlign: Center and align any three bright stars; no GPS or site information is needed.
-
1-Star and 2-Star Align: Align on one or two known stars for a quick setup.
-
Auto 2-Star Align: The scope slews to the second alignment star for you.
-
Solar System Align: Aligns on solar system objects. In the app, a one-object manual alignment on the Moon, Venus or the Sun (only with a proper full-aperture solar filter) is available for daytime use, with less precise pointing.
Can I manually move the NexStar Evolution 9.25 without losing alignment?
No. The manual clutches are designed for pointing the telescope when it is powered off or before an alignment. If you unlock the clutches and move the telescope manually after it has been aligned, the GoTo system will lose its orientation and you will need to perform a new alignment.
What are the 4 AUX ports on the mount for?
The four auxiliary (AUX) ports on the NexStar Evolution 9.25 mount allow you to connect various Celestron accessories. You can plug the included NexStar+ hand control into any of the ports. Other accessories, such as the Celestron StarSense AutoAlign, can also be connected to expand the telescope's capabilities.
How do I update the firmware on the NexStar Evolution 9.25?
Celestron provides a guide to updating the NexStar Evolution with Celestron Firmware Manager (CFM), which runs on a computer connected to the NexStar+ hand control's USB port.
How do I charge the battery?
The power input takes 12VDC, tip positive, up to 5.0A; the included supply gives 12VDC at 2.0A, with USA, EU, UK and AU plugs. The USB charge port supplies 5V at up to 2.0A to top off your phone or tablet; in Automatic mode it switches off when the battery is low, or it can be set to Always On. Charge with the included supply or a certified 12VDC supply of at least 2 amps.
