  • Celestron Nexstar Evolution 9.25 Telescope

The Celestron NexStar Evolution 9.25 puts a 235mm (9.25") f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain on a computerized single fork arm mount with integrated WiFi and a built-in battery that runs up to 10 hours. The 2350mm focal length gives 59x and 180x with the included 40mm and 13mm Plössl eyepieces, the resolution is 0.49 arc seconds (Dawes), and the tube gathers 1127x more light than the human eye. Control it from the SkyPortal app or the included NexStar+ hand control, with a 40,000+ object database.

    9.25" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain Optics: 0.49 Arc Second Resolution

The 9.25" optics reach a limiting stellar magnitude of 14.4, with a Rayleigh resolution of 0.59 arc seconds and a highest useful magnification of 555x. The 559mm (22") aluminum tube is 271.78mm (10.7") in diameter. The secondary obstruction is 85mm (3.35"), 36% by diameter and 13% by area.

Focusing moves the primary mirror, which slides on the primary baffle tube; the focus knob sits on the rear cell just below the star diagonal, and it takes about 30 turns to go from close focus to infinity. Make the final focus turn counterclockwise so the mirror moves against gravity, which minimizes any mirror shift, and start on a bright object such as the Moon or a planet, since out-of-focus stars are very diffuse.

    • StarBright XLT Coatings: StarBright XLT is Celestron's coating system, built from three parts: enhanced multi-layer mirror coatings of aluminum, SiO2 and TiO2, with reflectivity fairly flat across the spectrum for both imaging and visual use; multi-layer anti-reflective coatings of magnesium fluoride and hafnium dioxide; and water white glass instead of soda lime glass for the corrector. Water white glass transmits about 90.5% of light uncoated, 3.5% more than soda lime glass, and reaches an average transmission of 97.4% with the StarBright XLT anti-reflective coatings.
    • Resolution: 0.49 arc seconds (Dawes) and 0.59 arc seconds (Rayleigh).
    • CG-5 Dovetail: The 20 lb optical tube attaches to the mount via a standard CG-5 style dovetail bar.

Evolution Mount: 25 lb Capacity with Brass Worm Gears

The mount carries a 25 lb (11 kg) instrument load; the tube weighs 20 lbs. The single fork arm mount uses brass worm gears with ball bearings driving stainless steel worm wheels of 146mm diameter with 180 teeth, with improved DC servo motors. It slews at 9 speeds up to 4° per second and tracks at sidereal, solar and lunar rates in Alt-Az, EQ North and EQ South modes; the EQ modes need a wedge.

    • Manual Clutches: Manual clutches in altitude and azimuth let you point the telescope by hand when it is powered off. Do not unlock the clutches once the telescope is aligned with the app or hand control, or the alignment is lost and you must align again.
    • Heavy-Duty Tripod: The same heavy-duty stainless steel tripod used on the Celestron CPC series anchors the 9.25", with 2" (50.8mm) legs; with the mount the height range is 1244.6mm to 1651mm (49" to 65").

Integrated WiFi: Explore 40,000+ Objects with the SkyPortal App

The NexStar Evolution is the first Schmidt-Cassegrain with integrated WiFi. The telescope broadcasts its own "SkyQLink" network: connect your iOS or Android device to it, open the SkyPortal app and slew with a tap, using the planetarium view or a list of objects currently visible. SkyAlign is built into the app: you center and align any three bright stars, with no GPS or site information needed, and SkyPortal's mount modeling accepts up to 10 additional alignment stars for better GoTo accuracy. A WiFi switch selects Direct Connect, to your device, or Access Point mode, through your home router.

    • WiFi tips: In areas with heavy WiFi traffic, such as large star parties, try a site with less traffic, disabling WiFi on nearby devices, "forgetting" telescope networks on devices not in use, or using the included NexStar+ hand control instead.
    • 40,000+ Object Database: The full NexStar+ database is accessible from the app, containing over 40,000 objects including planets, nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.
    • NexStar+ Hand Control Included: A NexStar+ hand control is included but not needed with the app. It plugs into any of the 4 AUX ports, 2 on top of the fork and 2 on the bottom, which also accept StarSense AutoAlign and other accessories, and its menus control the logo and tray lighting, battery status, external power and USB charge port settings. Celestron also includes Starry Night Special Edition.

Internal LiFePO4 Battery: Up to 10 Hours

The built-in 9.6V, 4.5Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is a first on a consumer telescope, and runs up to 10 hours on a single charge. It has protection against overcharging, overdischarging and overheating, and it should last thousands of charge cycles with reasonable care. Charge it fully when you receive the telescope, use only the included power supply or a certified 12VDC supply of at least 2 amps, do not leave it discharged or low for long, and charge it every 3 to 6 months. An intelligent power management system goes into power-saving mode when the battery is low.

    • Power and USB charging: The power input takes 12VDC, tip positive, up to 5.0A; the included supply gives 12VDC at 2.0A, with USA, EU, UK and AU plugs. The USB charge port supplies 5V at up to 2.0A to top off your phone or tablet; in Automatic mode it switches off when the battery is low, or it can be set to Always On.
    • International AC Adapter: The included AC adapter comes with four international plug types, allowing you to charge the internal battery at home or on your travels.

    Weights and Ergonomic Design

The total kit weight is 62.6 lbs, broken down into manageable components: the 20 lb optical tube, 16 lb mount head, and 26.6 lb tripod. Large ergonomic handles make setup quick and painless.

    • Accessory Storage: two accessory trays hold up to 7 eyepieces, one with an adjustable red LED illuminator.

    Astroimaging with the Evolution 9.25

The 9.25-inch Evolution is an excellent way to get started in astroimaging, and its tracking accuracy lets you capture images of deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula by simply attaching your DSLR camera.

As you progress, the Celestron Pro HD Wedge, sold separately, allows longer exposures. Polar aligned on a wedge, the EQ North or EQ South alignment makes the telescope track equatorially, moving in one direction so the object stays centered without rotating, which is suitable for astroimaging. There is no autoguide port and no periodic error correction.

Included Eyepieces: 59x and 180x Magnification Out of the Box

The NexStar Evolution 9.25 arrives ready for observing with two 1.25" Plössl eyepieces, a star diagonal, and a red dot finder. The 40mm eyepiece gives 59x and the 13mm 180x (2350mm divided by each focal length).

    • StarPointer Red Dot Finder: superimposes a red LED dot on the sky; it runs on a CR2032 lithium battery and is aligned with its azimuth and altitude knobs, best done at night.
    • 1.25" Star Diagonal: gives a more comfortable viewing angle.
  • What makes the NexStar Evolution 9.25's internal battery special?

The built-in 9.6V, 4.5Ah lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is a first on a consumer telescope, and runs up to 10 hours on a single charge. It has protection against overcharging, overdischarging and overheating, and it should last thousands of charge cycles with reasonable care. An intelligent power management system goes into power-saving mode when the battery is low.

How does the WiFi control work on the NexStar Evolution 9.25?

The telescope generates its own wireless network. You connect your smartphone or tablet directly to this network (no internet or router is required). Then, you open the free Celestron SkyPortal app, which functions as a graphical planetarium interface. Tap any object on the screen, and the telescope's GoTo system will automatically slew to and track it.

Can I use the NexStar Evolution 9.25 for serious astrophotography?

The 9.25-inch Evolution is an excellent way to get started: you can capture deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula by simply attaching a DSLR camera.

What alignment methods are available for the NexStar Evolution 9.25?

The NexStar Evolution 9.25 supports a variety of alignment procedures to suit any situation. These can be initiated from the SkyPortal app or the NexStar+ hand control. Supported methods include:

    • SkyAlign: Center and align any three bright stars; no GPS or site information is needed.
    • 1-Star and 2-Star Align: Align on one or two known stars for a quick setup.
    • Auto 2-Star Align: The scope slews to the second alignment star for you.
    • Solar System Align: Aligns on solar system objects. In the app, a one-object manual alignment on the Moon, Venus or the Sun (only with a proper full-aperture solar filter) is available for daytime use, with less precise pointing.

Can I manually move the NexStar Evolution 9.25 without losing alignment?

No. The manual clutches are designed for pointing the telescope when it is powered off or before an alignment. If you unlock the clutches and move the telescope manually after it has been aligned, the GoTo system will lose its orientation and you will need to perform a new alignment.

What are the 4 AUX ports on the mount for?

The four auxiliary (AUX) ports on the NexStar Evolution 9.25 mount allow you to connect various Celestron accessories. You can plug the included NexStar+ hand control into any of the ports. Other accessories, such as the Celestron StarSense AutoAlign, can also be connected to expand the telescope's capabilities.

How do I update the firmware on the NexStar Evolution 9.25?

Celestron provides a guide to updating the NexStar Evolution with Celestron Firmware Manager (CFM), which runs on a computer connected to the NexStar+ hand control's USB port.

How do I charge the battery?

The power input takes 12VDC, tip positive, up to 5.0A; the included supply gives 12VDC at 2.0A, with USA, EU, UK and AU plugs.
