  • Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro Visual Enhanced Filter - 2"

The Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro Visual Enhanced Filter is designed for visual observation, with 95% peak transmission at 8 emission lines, including H-beta (486.1nm), OIII (500.7nm), H-alpha (656.3nm) and SII (671.6nm). This 2-inch filter suppresses sodium light and is designed to combat moderate light pollution while maintaining color balance. Antlia recommends large-aperture telescopes of 8 inches or more.

An 8-Line Passband Design: 95% Transmission for Key Nebulae Lines

This filter's core is a multi-bandpass design that transmits light from 8 specific spectral lines with 95% efficiency. By isolating the distinct wavelengths of doubly ionized oxygen (OIII), hydrogen (H-beta, H-alpha), nitrogen (NII), and sulfur (SII), it helps observers perceive fine structural detail in planetary and emission nebulae, even under moderate light pollution.

Antlia's suggested targets include the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960), the Orion Nebula (M42) and the Horsehead Nebula (IC 434), and Antlia states that the filter lets observers perceive fine structural detail in planetary and emission nebulae even under moderate light pollution.

Recommended for 8-inch+ Telescopes Under Moderate Light Pollution

Antlia recommends large-aperture telescopes, for example 8 inches or larger, for the 8-EL UHC Pro. Because the human eye captures fewer photons at night, a large aperture gives sufficient light throughput.

Antlia states that this compensates for the eye's sensitivity drop in low-light conditions while keeping the filter's balance between light pollution suppression and target brightness. Suggested targets include the Ring Nebula (M57) and the Eagle Nebula (M16).

Beyond H-beta and OIII: NII, H-alpha and SII Lines

Besides H-beta and OIII, the Antlia 8-EL passes NII, H-alpha and SII lines, each at 95% peak transmission. Antlia pairs each line with suggested observation targets:

    • Hydrogen-Alpha (656.3nm): Suggested targets include the North America Nebula (NGC 7000), M8 Lagoon Nebula and M16 Eagle Nebula.
    • Nitrogen II & Sulfur II (654.8nm - 673.1nm): Suggested targets include the Crab Nebula (M1) supernova remnant and the Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) planetary nebula.

    Ultra-Thin, Black Anodized 2" Filter Cell (M48x0.75)

The filter is housed in an ultra-thin, black-anodized cell, designed to minimize vignetting by maximizing the possible clear aperture.

The filter ring is 2-inch (M48x0.75). The cell is laser engraved, and Antlia states the engraving does not fade.

  • Which emission lines does the Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro filter pass?

    The Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro is a multi-band filter with 95% peak transmission at 8 emission lines: Hydrogen-Beta (486.1nm), Oxygen-III (495.9nm and 500.7nm), Nitrogen-II (654.8nm and 658.3nm), Hydrogen-Alpha (656.3nm) and Sulfur-II (671.6nm and 673.1nm). It also suppresses sodium light.

Why is the Antlia 8-EL filter recommended for telescopes 8 inches or larger?

Antlia's reason is that the human eye captures fewer photons at night. Telescopes with 8 inches of aperture or more give sufficient light throughput, compensating for the eye's sensitivity drop in low-light conditions while keeping the filter's balance between light pollution suppression and target brightness.

Is the Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro suited to the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960)?

Yes. Antlia lists the Veil Nebula among the suggested targets for its OIII, NII, H-alpha and SII lines. The Veil is a supernova remnant, and Antlia states that the filter's high transmission and sodium-light suppression let observers perceive fine structural detail in emission nebulae even under moderate light pollution, with a telescope of 8 inches or larger recommended.

Can I use the Antlia 8-EL filter on the Horsehead Nebula (IC 434)?

Antlia lists the Horsehead Nebula (IC 434) among the suggested targets for its H-alpha (656.3nm) and SII (671.6nm) lines. It is a difficult visual target, because it is a dark nebula silhouetted against a faint emission nebula, so results depend on your aperture and sky. Antlia recommends a telescope of 8 inches or larger and designed the filter for moderate light pollution.

Is the Antlia 8-EL UHC Pro filter suitable for astrophotography?

Antlia designed this filter for visual observation of celestial objects and gives no imaging specifications for it. It is not recommended for solar imaging.

Can I use the Antlia 8-EL filter for looking at the Sun?

ABSOLUTELY NOT. Antlia's warning: DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITH THIS FILTER DIRECTLY. Serious eye damage will result if you fail to observe the warning. The filter is also not recommended for solar imaging.
