  • Antlia LRGBR+ Dark Series Filter Set

The Antlia LRGBR+ Dark Series Filter Set uses a full-spectrum design covering 390nm to 1000nm, sensitive to both UV and IR light, for high signal-to-noise ratio and contrast in deep-sky imaging. This five-filter set includes a dedicated R+ filter with a 700-1000nm passband, which Antlia adds to capture valuable near-infrared signals that regular LRGB filters cannot detect. With peak transmission rates of ≥97% for LRG filters and ≥95% for the B filter, combined with OD4.5 out-of-band blocking, Antlia says this ensures almost no loss in image signal, maximizing contrast, while minimizing halos around bright stars.

    Full-Spectrum Design: Capturing Near-Infrared Signal from 700-1000nm

Unlike standard LRGB filters that cut off around 700nm, the Antlia Dark Series is designed for full-spectrum imaging from 390nm to 1000nm. The inclusion of the R+ filter, which isolates the 700-1000nm near-infrared band, captures near-infrared signal where cameras still have high quantum efficiency (QE). In post-processing, combine the R and R+ channels to create a new R channel; the remaining processing steps are the same as for regular LRGB filters.

OD4.5 Blocking and ≥97% Transmission for High-Contrast Results

To ensure maximum signal and clean data, the L, R, and G filters achieve a peak transmission of ≥97%, while the B filter reaches ≥95%. Antlia says this ensures that there is almost no loss in image signal, maximizing contrast. Out-of-band light is blocked to OD4.5, which passes only 0.005% outside the passbands, to block interference from other wavelengths and minimize halos around bright stars.

Quartz Glass Substrate and 3-Year Delamination Warranty

Each filter in the Dark Series is built on a quartz glass substrate, chosen for its extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion. Antlia states it gives excellent durability and thermal stability, better fracture and scratch resistance and improved coating resilience to cleaning, for imaging in challenging environmental conditions. All Antlia filters are coated to the edge of the substrate, unmounted sizes are edge blackened to eliminate internal reflections from stray light, and the set carries a 3-year warranty against delamination.

Better Parfocality with Antlia 2.5nm Ultra Narrowband Filters

For imagers building a complete filter collection, Antlia says the LRGBR+ Dark Series is best paired with its SHO 2.5nm Ultra narrowband filters: both use the same quartz substrate and refractive index, resulting in better parfocality. The filters also have an identical thickness to existing standards and double-sided fine polishing, with care for parfocality.

  • What is the purpose of the R+ filter in the Antlia LRGBR+ Dark Series set?

The R+ filter is a near-infrared pass filter covering 700-1000nm. Antlia includes it because cameras have high quantum efficiency in the near-infrared, so it captures valuable signals that regular LRGB filters cannot detect. In post-processing, the R and R+ data are combined to create a new R channel.

How do I process images taken with the Antlia LRGBR+ filters?

Antlia says the workflow is identical to regular LRGB processing apart from one extra step. You first combine your calibrated R and R+ frames to create a new R channel. After that, you proceed with standard LRGB combination and processing using your new R frame alongside the L, G, and B frames.

Why does the Antlia LRGBR+ Dark Series use a quartz glass substrate?

Quartz glass has an ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient, which Antlia says gives exceptional thermal and mechanical properties. Antlia lists excellent durability and thermal stability, better fracture and scratch resistance and improved coating resilience to cleaning.

Are the Antlia LRGBR+ filters parfocal with other Antlia filters?

Antlia says they are best paired with the Antlia SHO 2.5nm Ultra narrowband filter series: both use the same quartz substrate and refractive index, resulting in better parfocality. Antlia does not promise that no refocusing is needed, so check focus when switching filters.

Can the Antlia R+ filter be ordered on its own?

Yes. Antlia states that the LRGBR+ Dark series set, the LRGB Dark series set and the R+ filter can be ordered individually. The R+ filter covers 700-1000nm, so it can be added to an LRGB Dark set later.

Can I use the Antlia LRGBR+ Dark filters for visual observation or solar imaging?

No. Antlia lists solar imaging and night visual observation as not recommended, and warns: DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITH THIS FILTER. Serious eye damage will result if you fail to observe the warning.
