  • Celestron CGEM II 800 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope

The Celestron CGEM II 800 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope combines an 8-inch (203.2mm) Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube, which gathers 843 times more light than the human eye, with the robust CGEM II computerized equatorial mount. This system features a 40 lb payload capacity, a NexStar+ controller with a 40,000+ object database, and a maximum slew speed of 4.5° per second. With a Dawes limit resolution of 0.57 arc seconds and an included 25mm eyepiece providing 81x magnification, this setup is engineered for high-resolution astrophotography and detailed visual observation.

    8" Schmidt-Cassegrain Optics: 843x Light Gathering

At the heart of this system is the 203.2mm Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube. Combined with StarBright XLT coatings for maximum light transmission, the 843x light-gathering power resolves faint details in distant galaxies and nebulae, reaching a limiting stellar magnitude of 14.

CGEM II Mount: A Stable Platform with a 40 lb Payload Capacity

The redesigned CGEM II mount is a solid foundation for serious imaging, supporting a 40 lb instrument load with minimal vibration. It rests on a heavy-duty tripod with 2" (50.8mm) diameter steel legs, ensuring stability even when fully loaded. Ergonomics are central to the design, with large, easy-to-use knobs for latitude (15° - 70°) and azimuth adjustments, and internal motor wiring for a clean, snag-free setup. The dual CG-5 and CGE saddle plates provide compatibility with a wide range of optical tubes.

NexStar+ Control: 40,000+ Objects, All-Star Alignment, and PEC

The CGEM II is built for precise, automated imaging. Celestron’s innovative All-Star alignment procedure allows you to use any bright star for a quick and accurate polar alignment, even if you can't see Polaris. For long-exposure astrophotography, Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PEC) lets you train out the worm gear's periodic errors for smoother tracking. The mount can also track well past the meridian, preventing interruptions when imaging objects at their highest point in the sky, all controlled by the NexStar+ database of over 40,000 objects.

CGEM II vs. Advanced VX: The 10 lb Payload Advantage

While Celestron's Advanced VX (AVX) mount is an excellent portable option, the CGEM II represents a significant step up in stability and capacity for the dedicated imager. The primary advantage is the CGEM II's 40 lb payload capacity, a full 10 lbs more than the AVX, providing the necessary overhead for an 8" SCT plus a guidescope, camera, and other accessories. This increased capacity is supported by a more robust frame and a tripod with wider 2" steel legs, resulting in a more rigid platform that is critical for sharp, long-duration exposures.

  • Can the CGEM II 800 mount handle additional astrophotography gear?

Yes. The CGEM II mount has an instrument load capacity of 40 lbs (18 kg). The 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube weighs only 12.5 lbs (5.67 kg), leaving ample capacity for a guide scope, a DSLR or dedicated astronomy camera, a filter wheel, and an off-axis guider, making it an ideal platform for a complete imaging setup.

How does All-Star polar alignment on the CGEM II 800 work if I can't see Polaris?

Celestron's All-Star Polar Alignment is an innovative software routine that allows you to use any bright star in the sky for alignment. After performing an initial star alignment, you select a star from the hand control, and the software calculates the mount's polar alignment error. It then guides you to move the mount in altitude and azimuth to center the star, resulting in a precise polar alignment without needing a view of the celestial poles.

Is the Celestron CGEM II 800 portable enough for dark sky sites?

While a substantial system, it is designed to be transportable. The system breaks down into manageable components: the optical tube (12.5 lbs), the mount head (40 lbs), the tripod (20 lbs), and the counterweight (17 lbs). This modularity allows one person to transport and assemble the entire 90.5 lb telescope at a remote location.

How would the CGEM II 800 perform when imaging the Orion Nebula (M42) with a DSLR?

The CGEM II 800 is an excellent choice for imaging M42. The 2032mm focal length will frame the core of the nebula and the Trapezium cluster perfectly. The mount's Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PEC) will allow for long, unguided exposures to capture the faint outer nebulosity.

What can I expect to see of Jupiter's cloud bands with the CGEM II 800?

With its 0.57 arc-second Dawes resolution, the CGEM II 800 will provide highly detailed views of Jupiter. The included 25mm eyepiece (81x) will clearly show the primary equatorial belts and the four Galilean moons. Adding a 2x Barlow lens or a higher-power eyepiece will easily push the magnification towards the highest useful limit of 480x on nights of good seeing, revealing intricate details like festoons, barges, and the Great Red Spot.
