  • Celestron EclipSmart Solar Filter for 8” Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD Telescopes

The Celestron EclipSmart Solar Filter transforms your 8-inch SCT or EdgeHD telescope into a dedicated solar observatory, featuring a 176mm clear aperture and ISO 12312-2:2015(E) compliant filter material. This lightweight, 4.2 oz filter is custom-designed with a 225mm internal diameter for a secure fit, attaching with two 1" x 4" hook and loop straps to ensure safe, direct observation of sunspots, transits, and solar eclipses.

ISO 12312-2:2015 Certified: Safe Solar Views for Your 8" Telescope

The core of the EclipSmart filter is its Solar Safe technology, which has been independently tested to meet the rigorous transmission requirements of the ISO 12312-2:2015(E) international safety standard. The scratch-resistant polymer, produced by American Paper Optics, blocks 99.999% of visible light and all harmful IR and UV radiation. This allows you to safely observe the Sun's photosphere in detail, revealing sunspots and granulation in a natural, pleasing orange hue.

Custom 225mm Fit for Celestron SCT & EdgeHD: Secure Mounting and Full Aperture

Engineered specifically for Celestron's 8" optical tubes, this filter has an internal diameter of 225mm and an external diameter of 235mm, ensuring a snug fit without damaging your telescope's finish. The included safety kit, with two 1" x 4" straps and four adhesive tabs, prevents the filter from being accidentally dislodged by wind or bumps. The filter's generous 176mm clear aperture ensures your telescope's full resolving power is dedicated to the solar disk, preventing any vignetting or reduction in image brightness.

  • Will the EclipSmart filter fit non-Celestron 8" telescopes?

This filter is custom-designed for the 235mm external diameter of Celestron 8" SCT and EdgeHD optical tubes. While it might fit other telescopes with similar dimensions, you must verify the outer diameter of your specific telescope to ensure a safe, secure fit before purchasing. An unsecured filter is extremely dangerous.

How do I attach the EclipSmart Solar Filter to my NexStar 8SE?

To attach the filter, first apply the four 1" x 1" self-adhesive hook-and-loop tabs to the body of your telescope, spaced evenly around the front cell. Place the filter over the front of the telescope. Then, thread the two 1" x 4" hook-and-loop straps through the safety tabs on the filter housing and secure them tightly to the tabs on the telescope tube. Always check that the filter is secure before pointing the telescope at the Sun.

Can I see solar flares or prominences with the EclipSmart filter?

No. This is a white-light solar filter, designed for observing the Sun's surface (photosphere), which includes sunspots, granulation, and planetary transits. Solar flares and prominences are features of the chromosphere and require a specialized, narrow-band Hydrogen-alpha (H-alpha) telescope or filter to be seen.

What is the difference between the 176mm clear aperture and the 225mm internal diameter?

The 225mm internal diameter refers to the size of the filter's housing, designed to slip over the front of your 8" telescope. The 176mm clear aperture is the usable diameter of the solar filter material itself. This size is large enough to ensure that the entire primary mirror of your telescope is illuminated without being obstructed by the filter's frame.

How do I clean and store my EclipSmart solar filter?

Gently blow off any loose particles with a hand-blower. If further cleaning is needed, use a soft, lint-free cloth with a non-abrasive optical cleaning solution. Avoid harsh chemicals. Always inspect the filter for scratches or damage before each use. Store it in the included plastic protective case to prevent damage.

Is it safe to use this EclipSmart filter for imaging the Sun with my CPC 800?

Yes. The EclipSmart filter is safe for both visual observation and solar imaging. Because it fits over the front of the telescope, it rejects the Sun's energy before it enters the optical tube, keeping the internal components cool and safe. You can attach a planetary camera or DSLR to your CPC 800 as you normally would for astrophotography.
