What can I realistically see with the Celestron NexStar 5SE?
The 5SE's five-inch aperture shows Saturn's rings, the cloud bands on Jupiter and geographic features on the surface of the Moon, and from a dark-sky site hundreds of pinpoint stars in the Hercules Globular Cluster and the spiral arms of the Whirlpool Galaxy.
How easy is the SkyAlign alignment process for a beginner?
SkyAlign is designed specifically for beginners. You don't need to know the names of any stars. Simply point the telescope at any three bright celestial objects in the sky using the included StarPointer red dot finderscope, center them in the eyepiece, and the NexStar+ computer does the rest. It is as easy as 1-2-3.
What are the power options for the NexStar 5SE mount?
The NexStar 5SE runs on eight AA batteries (not included) in the compartment at the center of the base, or on 12 VDC at 750 mA from an optional 12V AC adapter or car battery adapter.
Is the NexStar 5SE a good choice for photographing deep-sky objects like nebulae?
The steel tripod has a built-in equatorial wedge tilt plate with a latitude adjustment rod. It lets you track long exposures, and the hand control offers EQ North and EQ South alignments for it. The 5SE is a perfect choice for exploring astroimaging, and one of the Celestron NexImage cameras suits the Moon and planets. There is no autoguide port.
Can I use different eyepieces with the NexStar 5SE?
Yes. The telescope includes a standard 1.25" star diagonal and a 25mm eyepiece, which gives 50x magnification. You can use any standard 1.25" eyepiece to change the magnification. Magnification is the focal length (1250mm) divided by the eyepiece focal length; the useful range is 18x to 295x.
What does the built-in equatorial wedge on the NexStar 5SE do?
The tripod's tilt plate is a built-in equatorial wedge set with a latitude adjustment rod. Polar aligned on it, the telescope uses the EQ North or EQ South alignment and tracking modes, which let you track long exposures.
Does the NexStar 5SE require a computer to operate?
No, the telescope is fully operational using only the included NexStar+ hand control. The hand control contains the entire 38,181 object database and all the functions needed for alignment and GoTo slewing. The USB port on the hand control is an optional feature that allows you to connect to a PC for mount control with compatible software, but it is not required for normal use.
Can I add StarSense AutoAlign or GPS?
Yes. StarSense AutoAlign, which makes the NexStar SE align itself, and SkySync, which provides GPS coordinates, are available as optional accessories.
How do I keep the corrector clean?
Dust on the corrector can be removed with a camel hair brush or pressurized air, then an optical cleaning solution and white tissue. Dew on the corrector can be cleared with a hair dryer on a low setting or by pointing the telescope at the ground until it evaporates. Internal cleaning and adjustments should be done only by Celestron's repair department.
