The Baader FFB FlatFieldBox provides a professional solution for observatory-grade calibration, delivering perfectly uniform, flicker-free illumination for any broadband or narrowband filter across a clear aperture of 450mm, 650mm, 850mm or 1250mm, from large amateur instruments up to 1-meter class observatory telescopes.
The core of every FFB is its ability to produce an exceptionally even field of light, a critical requirement for creating perfect flat frames. This uniformity extends across the entire visible spectrum, ensuring that vignetting, dust motes, and sensor artifacts are accurately recorded and removed from your final images, regardless of the telescope or camera used.
Engineered for permanent installation, the FFB is built on a rigid and torsion-free profile frame (30mm Minitech profiles on the FFB 850) for long-term stability. Its design allows for versatile mounting on walls, tables, or inside rotating domes, adapting to your specific observatory layout. Power can be supplied via a standalone unit or integrated directly into an Observatory Management System (OMS), with safe, low-voltage XT60 connectors ensuring secure operation. Due to its size, each model must be shipped in a purpose-built crate that is ordered separately: Baader #2455245 (450mm), #2455265 (650mm), #2455285 (850mm) or #2455225 (1250mm).
Unlike basic light sources that may have gaps in their spectral output, the FFB is designed to evenly illuminate the entire sensor through LRGB and narrowband filters alike. Together with flicker-free dimming (supporting exposures down to 1ms on the FFB 850), this complete spectral output provides accurate flat frames for every filter in your wheel, significantly reducing the need for complex flat-dark calibration frames and streamlining your image processing workflow.
The Baader FFB uses a specially engineered illumination technology to create a highly consistent, flicker-free light source across its entire surface. This ensures that every pixel on your camera's sensor receives the same amount of light, which is essential for accurately calibrating out optical train imperfections like dust and vignetting.
Yes. Every FFB is designed with a full-spectrum light source that provides strong, even illumination across the wavelengths used by common narrowband filters (e.g., H-alpha, OIII, SII) as well as standard broadband (LRGB) filters. This allows you to create high-quality flat frames for your entire imaging system.
The Baader FFB is built with a robust profile frame designed for flexible, permanent installation. It can be mounted on a wall, placed on a tabletop, or integrated into the structure of a rotating observatory dome, depending on your setup and workflow.
The FFB can be powered in two ways. You can use a standalone power supply (available separately) for static installations or integrate it directly with an Observatory Management System (OMS) for remote control. It uses safe, low-voltage XT60 connectors for power.
Choose a clear aperture that fully covers your telescope. With 450mm (approximately 17.7 inches), the FFB 450 is more than capable of fully illuminating a 14-inch (356mm) Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope. The FFB 650 and FFB 850 accommodate larger systems such as big Ritchey-Chrétiens or large refractors, and the 1250mm FFB is designed for 1-meter class telescopes.
A flicker-free light source is crucial for modern CMOS astrophotography cameras, which use very short exposures for flat frames. Any flicker in the light source can cause banding or inconsistent illumination from one frame to the next. The FFB's stable output ensures every flat is perfectly and consistently exposed.
