Which filter wheel configuration should I order?
If you already own Quantum, ATM or University filters, order the housing only option and DayStar will move your existing optics into it. If you are starting fresh and want the two most-compared solar wavelengths, order the 0.5Å Ha / 2Å CaK set. If you want the full research instrument, the four-filter PE set adds a second H-alpha bandpass plus Sodium-D and Calcium-H. Any configuration can be returned to the factory later to fill its remaining positions.
How does the DayStar Filter Wheel achieve the required F/30 focal ratio on my telescope?
The filter wheel itself does not alter the focal ratio. You must use an external Barlow or telecentric lens to slow your telescope's native focal ratio to the required F/27-F/35 range. For example, an f/8 refractor would need approximately a 4x Barlow to reach f/32. Using a high-quality, telecentric amplifier is recommended to ensure the light rays are parallel through the etalon for the best image contrast.
Can I install my existing DayStar Quantum filter into the Solar System Filter Wheel?
Yes. That is exactly what the housing only configuration is for: DayStar moves existing Quantum, ATM or University series filters into the filter wheel housing, so you can integrate filters you already own into this multi-wavelength system. You would coordinate the transfer directly with DayStar Filters.
What is the advantage of having both 0.4Å and 0.7Å H-alpha filters in the four-filter set?
The two Hydrogen-Alpha filters offer different views of the sun's chromosphere.
-
0.4Å H-alpha: This narrower bandpass provides higher contrast on surface details like filaments, plage, and spicules. It is ideal for detailed study of the solar disk.
-
0.7Å H-alpha: This wider bandpass is brighter and better suited for viewing prominences extending off the limb of the sun, which can be fainter and require more light throughput.
Having both allows you to switch instantly between a high-contrast disk view and a bright prominence view.
For an outreach event with a 120mm refractor, how does the DayStar Filter Wheel simplify showing the Sun in different wavelengths?
The DayStar Filter Wheel is ideal for outreach. Instead of setting up three or four separate telescopes, you use one 120mm refractor (with the appropriate telecentric to reach F/30). With the press of a button, you can switch the view from Hydrogen-Alpha to Calcium in under three seconds. This allows you to directly compare how features like active regions appear in different spectral lines, providing a much more dynamic and educational experience for the public without the logistical complexity of multiple rigs.
Does each filter position in the DayStar wheel have its own independent temperature tuning?
Yes. Each filter slot is a fully independent Quantum filter core with its own precision heating and control system. When you select a filter, the wheel applies power and control to that specific etalon. This ensures that each filter is perfectly on-band and allows for wing-shifting, just like a standalone DayStar Quantum filter.
If I buy the filter wheel with two filters, what is the process to add a third or fourth later?
To add filters, the wheel must be returned to the DayStar factory. Their technicians will install, align, and calibrate the new filter cores into the empty slots in the housing. This ensures that each filter performs to specification within the integrated system. You would purchase the new filter and arrange the upgrade service directly with DayStar.
