  • WandererCover V4-EC

Available in seven sizes from 80mm to 240mm, the WandererCover V4-EC provides a complete remote observatory solution for telescope protection and image calibration. It integrates a high-precision micro-encoder for real-time positional awareness, a redesigned high-torque motor for all-weather reliability, and an advanced electroluminescent panel for capturing flawless, banding-free flat fields.

Encoder-Controlled Automation: Know Your Cover's Exact Position

For remote imaging, knowing your equipment's status is critical. The WandererCover V4-EC incorporates a built-in micro-encoder that provides real-time, accurate feedback on the cover's angle. This allows you to confirm the open or closed state of your telescope remotely through software, eliminating the need for a secondary monitoring camera.

The system delivers high repeat positioning accuracy for precise, reliable open and close operations every cycle. While an automatic detection feature exists to find open/close limits, manual calibration is always recommended for optimal setup and to ensure no interference with your optical tube.

Redesigned Motor Drive: All-Weather Operation and Durability

A completely redesigned motor gives the V4-EC a significant increase in load capacity, ensuring the gearbox is protected from failure and can handle long-term, repeated use. This robust construction is essential for automated observatories that run night after night.

The entire system is engineered to withstand low temperatures, operating reliably even in harsh winter conditions. Rigorous testing has confirmed a long operational lifespan, giving you confidence that your optical system is protected regardless of the weather.

Advanced EL Panel: Clean, Band-Free Flats for Narrowband Imaging

Modern CMOS sensors and fast optical systems can reveal banding artifacts in flat frames caused by low-frequency PWM dimming. The WandererCover V4-EC solves this with a new dimming controller that boosts the PWM frequency, effectively eliminating banding in exposures even as short as a tenth of a second.

With fine-grained dimming control, the panel's brightness can be set perfectly for any imaging need, from broadband color cameras to ultra-narrowband filters. At maximum brightness, it is capable of producing sufficient illumination for flat frames with 3nm narrowband filters in just a few seconds.

Choosing Your Size: Matching the WandererCover V4-EC from 80mm to 240mm

Selecting the correct WandererCover is based on the outer diameter of your telescope's dew shield, not its aperture. To ensure full illumination and proper fit, measure the widest part of the front of your telescope and choose the WandererCover with a luminous diameter that is equal to or larger than your measurement.

For example, if you have a 100mm refractor, but its dew shield has an outer diameter of 120mm, you must select the 125mm WandererCover V4-EC model. Taking this measurement ensures your flat fields will be evenly illuminated from edge to edge.

  • How do I choose the right size WandererCover V4-EC for my telescope?

You must measure the outer diameter of your telescope's dew shield. The luminous diameter of the WandererCover V4-EC must be equal to or greater than this measurement. For example, a telescope with a 120mm dew shield outer diameter requires the 125mm model, even if the telescope's aperture is only 100mm.

Can the WandererCover V4-EC operate in freezing temperatures?

Yes. The WandererCover V4-EC is specifically designed to withstand low temperatures and has been tested for reliable operation in winter conditions as low as -20°C. The robust motor and electronics ensure consistent performance for all-season remote observatories.

What makes the WandererCover V4-EC's flat panel good for narrowband imaging?

The EL panel is exceptionally bright and features an advanced dimming controller with 255 adjustment levels. This allows it to produce enough light to create well-exposed flat frames in just a few seconds, even through very restrictive 3nm narrowband filters, saving valuable calibration time.

My remote observatory has no camera pointing at the telescope; can I still confirm the WandererCover V4-EC is open?

Yes. This is a primary benefit of the built-in micro-encoder. The ASCOM driver reports the precise angle of the cover, so you can have 100% software-based confirmation that the cover is fully open before an imaging run begins, or fully closed after it ends.

How does the WandererCover V4-EC prevent banding on a fast astrograph like a RASA or Hyperstar system?

Fast systems require very short exposures for flat fields, which can expose banding artifacts from typical PWM-controlled panels. The WandererCover V4-EC uses a much higher PWM dimming frequency, which ensures a smooth, even light source and prevents banding on exposures of 0.1 seconds or longer.

Can I control multiple Wanderer Astro devices with the WandererCover V4-EC's driver?

Yes. The new ASCOM driver supports automatic or manual port selection and can connect up to six Wanderer Astro devices simultaneously, simplifying cable management and software configuration in a complex imaging setup.
