  • Kowa TE-17HD Long Eye Relief Eyepiece

The Kowa TE-17HD Long Eye Relief Eyepiece is a fixed magnification eyepiece for Kowa's TSN-82SV, TSN-660M, and TSN-600 series spotting scopes. Its defining feature is 32mm of eye relief. On the TSN-82SV, Kowa's manual gives 27x with a 2.0° real field of view, 35 m at 1,000 m (105 ft at 1,000 yds). kowaoptics.com lists it as a 25x eyepiece weighing 7.3 oz.

    32mm of Eye Relief

The TE-17HD has 32mm of eye relief, the longest of Kowa's three TSN-82SV eyepieces (the TE-14WD has 20mm and the TE-9Z 16.5 to 16mm). Eye relief is the distance behind the eyepiece at which the eye sees the full field. Kowa makes no further eyeglass claim for this eyepiece.

Kowa calls the TE-17HD a favorite for target shooting.

    Fixed Magnification for TSN-82SV/660M/600 Scopes

Kowa's TSN-82SV manual lists, for the TE-17HD on the TSN-82SV:

    • Magnification: 27x (LER)
    • Real field of view: 2.0°
    • Field of view: 35 m at 1,000 m (105 ft at 1,000 yds)
    • Exit pupil: 3.0 mm (relative brightness 9.0)
    • Eye relief: 32 mm

The manual explains that the magnification printed on these eyepieces is for TSN-660/600 series scopes and changes on the TSN-82SV. On the TSN-82SV the eyepiece fits the bayonet eyepiece mount, which lets it be easily attached and removed.

This eyepiece is also compatible with Kowa's legacy TSN-1, TSN-2, TSN-3, and TSN-4 spotting scopes, according to Kowa.

TE-17HD vs. TE-9Z and TE-14WD: Choosing Your Eyepiece

For users of the TSN-82SV series, the TE-17HD is one of three specialized eyepieces available. The choice depends on your primary application.

    • Kowa TE-17HD (This Model): Offers the lowest fixed magnification (27x on the TSN-82SV, marked 25x) and the longest eye relief of the three at 32mm. Kowa calls it a favorite for target shooting.
    • Kowa TE-14WD: The wide angle option: 32x on the TSN-82SV (marked 30x) with a wider 2.2° real field and 20mm eye relief.
    • Kowa TE-9Z: The zoom option: 21-63x on the TSN-82SV (marked 20-60x), with 16.5-16mm eye relief.

  • Will the Kowa TE-17HD eyepiece work with my TSN-88 PROMINAR scope?

No. Kowa lists the TE-17HD for the TSN-82SV, TSN-660M, and TSN-600 series spotting scopes and legacy TSN-1/2/3/4 scopes. For the TSN-99, TSN-88, TSN-77 and TSN-66, Kowa lists the TE-11WZ II, TE-80XW and TE-20H eyepieces.

What is the main advantage of the Kowa TE-17HD's 32mm eye relief?

The 32mm of eye relief lets your eye see the full field from farther behind the eyepiece lens than the TE-14WD (20mm) or TE-9Z (16.5-16mm) allow. Kowa makes no specific eyeglass claim for it.

Why is the Kowa TE-17HD recommended for target shooting?

Kowa calls the TE-17HD a favorite for target shooting but does not give its reasons. Its defining figures are 32mm of eye relief and a fixed magnification of 27x on the TSN-82SV.

How does the Kowa TE-17HD compare to the TE-9Z zoom eyepiece?

The TE-17HD has a fixed magnification (27x on the TSN-82SV) and 32mm of eye relief. The TE-9Z provides a zoom range of 21-63x on the TSN-82SV (marked 20-60x) with 16.5-16mm of eye relief.

Is the magnification of the Kowa TE-17HD always 25x?

No. Kowa's TSN-82SV manual explains that the magnification printed on these eyepieces is for TSN-660/600 series scopes and changes on the TSN-82SV: the TE-17HD, listed as 25x, gives 27x on the TSN-82SV.

Does the Kowa TE-17HD have a wide field of view?

On the TSN-82SV, Kowa's manual lists a 2.0° real field of view for the TE-17HD (35 m at 1,000 m, 105 ft at 1,000 yds). The Kowa TE-14WD Wide Angle Eyepiece gives a wider 2.2° field at 32x on the same scope.
