  • Kowa TE-9Z 20-60x Zoom Eyepiece

The Kowa TE-9Z 20-60x Zoom Eyepiece is the zoom eyepiece for Kowa's TSN-82SV, TSN-660M and TSN-600 series spotting scopes. On the TSN-82SV, Kowa's manual gives a zoom range of 21x to 63x, with a field of view from 31 m down to 17 m at 1,000 m (93 ft to 51 ft at 1,000 yds). The eye relief varies from 16.5mm at low power to 16mm at the highest magnification.

21-63x Zoom Range on the Kowa TSN-82SV

The primary function of the TE-9Z is to provide a continuous range of magnifications without changing eyepieces. At the low end you can scan a wider area to locate subjects, then zoom in for fine detail on distant targets. Kowa says the fully multi-coated optics deliver crisp images and true color. Kowa's TSN-82SV manual lists, for the TE-9Z on the TSN-82SV:

    • Magnification: 21-63x zoom
    • Real field of view: 1.8° to 0.95°
    • Field of view: 31 to 17 m at 1,000 m (93 to 51 ft at 1,000 yds)
    • Exit pupil: 3.9 to 1.3 mm (relative brightness 15.2 to 1.7)
    • Eye relief: 16.5 to 16 mm

The manual explains that the magnification printed on these eyepieces is for TSN-660/600 series scopes and changes on the TSN-82SV. kowaoptics.com lists the TE-9Z at 8.2 oz.

Compatibility with 3 Kowa Scope Series and Legacy Models

This eyepiece is specifically engineered for Kowa's TSN-82SV, TSN-660M, and TSN-600 series spotting scopes. On the TSN-82SV it fits the bayonet eyepiece mount, which lets the eyepiece be easily attached and removed. Kowa also lists the TE-9Z as compatible with legacy Kowa scopes: the TSN-1, TSN-2, TSN-3, and TSN-4. The manual notes that TSN-820/820M series eyepieces and TSN-EC eyepiece converters cannot be used with the TSN-82SV.

    TE-9Z vs. 2 Fixed Eyepieces: The TE-14WD and TE-17HD

The TE-9Z gives a zoom range, while Kowa's two fixed magnification eyepieces for the same scopes each suit a narrower use. The choice depends on your primary observing style and needs.

    • vs. TE-14WD Wide Angle: On the TSN-82SV the TE-14WD gives a fixed 32x (marked 30x) with a 2.2° real field (114 ft at 1,000 yds) and 20mm of eye relief, a wider field than the TE-9Z at any setting. If your priority is a wide view for scanning or tracking moving subjects, the TE-14WD has the edge.
    • vs. TE-17HD Long Eye Relief: The TE-17HD is Kowa's long eye relief eyepiece: a fixed 27x on the TSN-82SV (marked 25x) with 32mm of eye relief, against the TE-9Z's 16.5mm maximum. Kowa calls it a favorite for target shooting.
  • Which Kowa spotting scopes are compatible with the TE-9Z eyepiece?

The Kowa TE-9Z is designed for the TSN-82SV, TSN-660M, and TSN-600 series spotting scopes. It is also backward-compatible with older Kowa models, including the TSN-1, TSN-2, TSN-3, and TSN-4.

What magnification range does the Kowa TE-9Z provide on a TSN-82SV scope?

Kowa's TSN-82SV manual gives 21x to 63x for the TE-9Z on the TSN-82SV, with a field of view of 93 feet at 21x and 51 feet at 63x at 1,000 yards (31 to 17 m at 1,000 m). The 20-60x in its name is the range on TSN-660/600 series scopes; kowaoptics.com lists 20-60x and 102-56 ft.

Is the Kowa TE-9Z eyepiece suitable for digiscoping?

Yes. Kowa describes the TE-9Z as very well suited for digiscoping, and says its fully multi-coated optics deliver crisp images and true color. The zoom also lets you adjust how tightly you frame your subject.

How does the TE-9Z zoom eyepiece compare to the fixed TE-14WD wide-angle eyepiece?

The TE-9Z offers a zoom range (21-63x on the TSN-82SV), while the TE-14WD provides a fixed magnification (32x on the TSN-82SV). The trade-off is field of view and eye relief: on the TSN-82SV the TE-14WD has a wider field (114 ft vs. 93 ft at 1,000 yds) and more eye relief (20mm vs. 16.5mm) than the TE-9Z at its lowest setting.

Does the eye relief of the Kowa TE-9Z change when I zoom?

Yes, the eye relief changes slightly as you zoom. It is 16.5mm at the low end and decreases to 16mm at the high end of the zoom. For more eye relief, Kowa's TE-17HD long eye relief eyepiece offers 32mm.

I have an older Kowa TSN-2 scope. Will the TE-9Z fit?

Yes. Kowa lists the TE-9Z as compatible with legacy TSN-1, TSN-2, TSN-3, and TSN-4 spotting scopes. Kowa does not give its magnification on those scopes.
