  • Kowa TSN-82SV Spotting Scope Body, Angled

The Kowa TSN-82SV Spotting Scope Body combines a large 82mm objective lens with fully multi-coated optics for outstanding light-gathering power and a very bright field of view, as Kowa describes it. Weighing 1490g and measuring 383mm in length, this scope is built around fully multi-coated optics that produce sharp, vibrant images with natural color. A single focus knob focuses down to 6 m, and the bayonet mount accepts the Kowa TE-9Z, TE-14WD and TE-17HD eyepieces (sold separately). This is the body only: no eyepiece is included.

The Kowa TSN-82SV: A Large-Aperture Scope for Nature Observation

The Kowa TSN-82SV is Kowa's classic large-diameter scope. Its large 82mm aperture suits birding, wildlife observation and nature study, and Kowa highlights its light-gathering power for low-light observation. The bright, sharp image it produces makes identifying distant subjects easier and more rewarding.

Kowa describes the body as fully waterproof and dry nitrogen filled, a scope built for the great outdoors. It is also suited to digiscoping, thanks to its accessory collar and large objective.

    Kowa TSN-82SV 82mm objective lens

82mm Objective Lens: Outstanding Light-Gathering and Multi-Coated Optics

At the heart of the TSN-82SV is its large 82mm objective lens. Kowa says this aperture has superb light-gathering power, giving a bright image. All lenses, prisms, and dustproof glass surfaces within the optical path are fully multi-coated.

These advanced coatings minimize light loss and internal reflections, resulting in a view that is sharp and rich in contrast. Kowa describes the image as sharp and vibrant while retaining a natural warm color.

Angled Body Design: Comfortable Viewing at Any Angle

This version of the TSN-82SV has an angled body, with the eyepiece set at an angle to the main optical tube (Kowa does not state the angle). An angled body lets you look down into the eyepiece, which many observers find comfortable for sustained viewing, especially of subjects at or above the horizon.

    Kowa TSN-82SV bayonet eyepiece mount

Eyepiece System: From 21x-63x Zoom to a 32x Wide-Angle View

The TSN-82SV body is compatible with eyepieces from Kowa's TSN-660/600 series, which attach via a secure and convenient bayonet mount. Kowa lists three eyepieces for it, all sold separately. The magnification printed on each eyepiece is for the TSN-660/600 series scopes; on the TSN-82SV the magnification changes, and the figures below are from the TSN-82SV manual (kowaoptics.com lists 20-60x, 30x and 25x). TSN-820/820M series eyepieces and the TSN-EC eyepiece converters cannot be used with the TSN-82SV.

    • TE-9Z Zoom Eyepiece: 21x to 63x on the TSN-82SV, 1.8° to 0.95° real field, 16.5 to 16 mm eye relief. Locate a subject at low power, then zoom in.
    • TE-14WD Wide Angle Eyepiece: fixed 32x on the TSN-82SV, 2.2° real field, 20 mm eye relief, 38 m at 1,000 m.
    • TE-17HD LER Eyepiece: fixed 27x on the TSN-82SV, 2.0° real field, 32 mm eye relief (the longest of the three).

Precise Focusing From 6 Meters to Infinity

The TSN-82SV has a single large focus knob, which Kowa describes as responsive and precise. Turn it clockwise for far focus and counterclockwise for close focus.

The minimum focusing distance is 6 meters (19.7 feet; the manual rounds it to 20 ft).

    Kowa TSN-82SV body

Built for the Field: Waterproof Polycarbonate Body

The internal optics of the TSN-82SV are protected by a tough, rugged polycarbonate body. Kowa states the scope is fully waterproof and dry nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, and gives no waterproof rating. Dust protection glass protects the scope body from dust and moisture.

A sliding sunshade extends to protect the objective lens from rain and to block stray light, enhancing image contrast on bright days. The rotating tripod mount lets you turn the body: loosen the lock screw counterclockwise, rotate the scope to the desired position and retighten.

    Digiscoping with the Kowa TSN-82SV

Digiscoping Ready: The Standard Kowa Accessory Collar

Kowa designed the TSN-82SV to digiscope, that is, to take photos through the scope. It is fitted with Kowa's standard accessory collar, allowing for the quick and easy connection of various digiscoping adapters for smartphones, DSLRs, and compact system cameras.

The large 82mm objective lens gathers ample light, which helps with digiscoping. The manual names the TSN-DA1 and TSN-DA4 digital camera adapters and the TSN-AR adapter rings (AR28, AR30, AR30S, AR37, AR43, AR46, AR52, AR55, AR58, AR62, AR72).

Protection in the Field: 86mm Filter Thread and Stay-On Case

The objective has an 86mm filter thread. Kowa does not name a specific filter for the TSN-82SV in its material.

The manual also lists an optional stay-on case, which lets you set the scope on a tripod with the case on.

    Using the Kowa TSN-82SV

Setup and Sighting: Using the TSN-82SV on a Tripod

The manual notes that hand-held observation is difficult because of image blurring, so mount the TSN-82SV on a stable tripod. Attach the eyepiece with the bayonet mount, which lets it be easily attached and removed. When a subject is difficult to find, use the sighting tube to aim the scope, then focus with the focus knob.

Care and Maintenance for Your Kowa Spotting Scope

Keep the objective lens cap and eyepiece mount cap on when the scope is not in use. Remove loose dust from the lenses with a blower before wiping them. Kowa's TSN-82SV material gives no further cleaning or storage instructions.

    Kowa's Limited Lifetime Warranty

Kowa stands behind the quality of its optics with a Limited Lifetime Warranty for the TSN-82SV. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner, provided the scope was purchased from an authorized North American Kowa retailer. Kowa requests product registration within 30 days of purchase.

  • Is the Kowa TSN-82SV a PROMINAR model with a fluorite lens?

No, the TSN-82SV is not a PROMINAR model and does not use a fluorite crystal objective lens. It has an 82mm objective lens with fully multi-coated optics (all lenses, prisms and dustproof glass), which Kowa describes as giving a very bright field of view.

Which eyepieces are compatible with the Kowa TSN-82SV?

The TSN-82SV is compatible with eyepieces designed for the Kowa TSN-660/600 series scopes. The primary options are:

    • TE-9Z: Provides 21-63x zoom magnification.
    • TE-14WD: Provides 32x wide-angle magnification.
    • TE-17HD: Provides 27x long eye relief magnification.

Note that eyepieces from the TSN-820/820M series are not compatible with this scope.

Why is the magnification I get with the TSN-82SV different from what's printed on the eyepiece?

The magnification printed on the Kowa TE-9Z, TE-14WD, and TE-17HD eyepieces (e.g., 20-60x on the TE-9Z) is calculated for the TSN-660/600 series scopes. The TSN-82SV has a longer focal length, which results in higher magnification with the same eyepiece. For example, the TE-9Z becomes a 21-63x zoom when used on the TSN-82SV.

What is the main advantage of the TSN-82SV's 82mm objective lens?

The primary advantage of the large 82mm objective lens is its outstanding light-gathering capability. This results in a significantly brighter image compared to smaller scopes, which is especially beneficial for observing wildlife during the low-light conditions of dawn and dusk. This brightness also improves performance for digiscoping.

Can I use standard camera filters with the Kowa TSN-82SV?

Yes. The objective lens housing of the TSN-82SV is threaded to accept standard 86mm filters. Kowa does not name a specific filter for the TSN-82SV in its material.

How close can the Kowa TSN-82SV focus?

The Kowa TSN-82SV has a minimum focusing distance of 6 meters (19.7 feet). Turn the focus knob counterclockwise for close focus and clockwise for far focus.

How does the angled body of the TSN-82SV help when birdwatching?

Kowa does not compare angled and straight bodies for the TSN-82SV. In general, an angled body lets you look down into the eyepiece, which many observers find comfortable for subjects at or above the horizon, while a straight body points along your line of sight. The sighting tube helps you find subjects with either.

What do I need to start digiscoping with the Kowa TSN-82SV?

To start digiscoping, you will need the TSN-82SV body, a compatible Kowa eyepiece, and a Kowa digiscoping adapter. The scope is fitted with Kowa's standard accessory collar, and the manual names the TSN-DA1 and TSN-DA4 digital camera adapters and the TSN-AR series adapter rings (TSN-AR28 to TSN-AR72). Kowa also says to use a stable tripod.

Is the Kowa TSN-82SV scope body heavy?

The Kowa TSN-82SV body weighs 1490g (52.5 oz). Kowa describes it as portable and lightweight for an 82mm scope, with a polycarbonate body. The manual says hand-held observation is difficult because of image blurring, so use a stable tripod.

What does the Kowa Limited Lifetime Warranty cover for the TSN-82SV?

The Kowa Limited Lifetime Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner when purchased from an authorized North American retailer. It does not cover damage from unauthorized repair, alteration, abuse, or normal wear and tear. Kowa requests product registration within 30 days of purchase.
