What can I see with it?
The filters pass only H-alpha light at 656.28 nanometers, allowing observation of active prominences in the H-alpha band.
What does the 0.5Å bandwidth mean?
It is the width of the slice of spectrum passed. The Heliostar 76Ha passes under 0.5Å, centered on the 656.28 nanometer hydrogen line.
Is the Heliostar 76Ha telescope safe to use for solar viewing?
Its permanently mounted glass solar filters conform to the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2. The Sun can only be observed in prominence (H-alpha) mode with the certified solar filters in place, and observing it in any other mode will cause permanent and irreversible damage to the eyes and the equipment.
How do I find the Sun with the Heliostar 76Ha?
Point the telescope using the solar guider: adjust the mount until no projection appears in the guider, then until the shadow sits in the middle of the pinhole, and finally until the shadow is centered on the projection glass.
What mount does it need?
The tube weighs 3.8 kg (8.4 lb) and comes with mounting rings on a V-style dovetail bar, so use a mount with a Vixen-style saddle and a payload rating that covers it.
How do I set it up?
Attach the dovetail to the mount's saddle and lock the knobs, then install the zenith prism and eyepiece, fasten them with the knurled screws and remove the cap. Aim with the solar guider, then focus and tune.
Can I take pictures of the Sun with the Heliostar 76Ha?
A smartphone adapter is included for photographing through the eyepiece; see its manual for details.
How do I focus?
Loosen the set screw and turn the focusing knob for fast focusing, then turn the adjusting bolt left and right until prominences in the eyepiece are nearly sharp. Place the telescope outside for more than half an hour first.
Why does the manual say to let the Heliostar 76Ha sit outside before use?
Place it outside for more than half an hour before every use so the temperature inside and outside the etalon housing is constant, which improves observing and imaging.
Can I use the Heliostar 76Ha to look at stars and planets at night?
No. It is a dedicated H-alpha solar telescope with permanently mounted solar filters.
How do I clean and care for the Heliostar 76Ha?
Keep the dust caps on when not in use, clean the optics only with a lint-free cloth when dust has accumulated, never submerge it and never dismantle it.
