  • Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 Tabletop Dobsonian

The Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 Tabletop Dobsonian combines a 130mm parabolic primary mirror and a 650mm focal length (f/5) into a uniquely portable design. Its collapsible tube shrinks from a full 25 inches down to just 14.75 inches for transport, with the optical tube assembly (OTA) weighing only 6.5 pounds. This design delivers the light-gathering power needed for deep-sky objects while remaining compact enough for any backyard or dark-sky trip.

130mm Aperture with 94% Reflectivity Coatings

The optical system is built around a 130mm borosilicate parabolic mirror, an aperture large enough to resolve details in planets, split double stars, and reveal structure in nebulae and galaxies. The mirrors feature Sky-Watcher's Radiant Aluminum Quartz (RAQ)™ coatings, which achieve 94% reflectivity for brighter, higher-contrast images. At f/5, the telescope provides a wide field of view, making it easy to locate and frame large objects like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the Pleiades star cluster (M45).

Collapsible Design: From 25" to 14.75" for Portability

The key feature of the Heritage 130 is its collapsible truss-tube OTA. This design allows the telescope to retract to a compact 14.75 inches, making it easy to store in a closet or pack in a car. When extended to its full 25-inch operating length, it maintains collimation, ensuring you spend more time observing. The entire optical tube, with rings and finder, weighs just 6.5 pounds, making setup effortless.

Stable Tabletop Base at 13.5 Pounds

The single-arm Dobsonian alt-azimuth mount provides a simple and stable platform for the telescope. Weighing 13.5 pounds, the wooden base features Teflon bearings for smooth, intuitive push-to navigation across the sky. An altitude locking knob allows you to fix the telescope in place for steady viewing, while vibration-suppressing rubber feet ensure stability on a sturdy table, car hood, or other flat surface.

Ready for Observing with 26x & 65x Magnification

The Heritage 130 arrives ready for stargazing right out of the box. It includes two 1.25" SUPER eyepieces to get you started. The 25mm eyepiece provides a low-power, wide-field view at 26x magnification, perfect for scanning the Milky Way or locating objects. For higher-power views of the Moon and planets, the 10mm eyepiece delivers 65x magnification. A red dot finder is also included to help you aim the telescope accurately.

  • What can I see with the Sky-Watcher Heritage 130?

The 130mm aperture is large enough to show you a wealth of celestial objects. You can expect to see detailed craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the cloud belts and moons of Jupiter, and the phases of Venus. Under dark skies, it will reveal dozens of galaxies like Andromeda (M31) and Bode's Galaxy (M81), nebulae like the Orion Nebula (M42), and countless star clusters.

How will the Orion Nebula (M42) look through the Heritage 130 from a suburban backyard?

From a suburban location, the Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 will clearly show the Orion Nebula (M42) as a distinct, hazy cloud of light. Using the included 25mm eyepiece (26x), you will easily resolve the four bright stars of the Trapezium cluster at its core. While light pollution will wash out the faintest outer details, the core structure will be unmistakable.

Is the Heritage 130's collapsible tube difficult to collimate?

The truss-tube system is designed to hold collimation well between uses. While all Newtonian reflectors require occasional collimation, the Heritage 130 is generally stable. Minor adjustments may be needed after transport, but it is a straightforward process that ensures the best possible image sharpness.

What kind of surface do I need to place the Heritage 130 on?

The tabletop Dobsonian base is designed for a flat, stable surface. A sturdy picnic table, a concrete patio ledge, or even the hood of a car can work well. The base's rubber feet help suppress vibrations. For more comfortable viewing, some users place it on a small, sturdy stool or crate to raise the eyepiece to a convenient height.

Can I use other 1.25" eyepieces with the Heritage 130?

Yes. The telescope comes with a 1.25" helical focuser that accepts any standard 1.25" eyepiece or accessory. You can expand your collection with higher-power eyepieces for planetary viewing or wider-field eyepieces for observing large nebulae. A quality Barlow lens would also be a great addition to double the magnification of any eyepiece.

How does the helical focuser on the Heritage 130 work?

A helical focuser achieves focus by twisting the eyepiece holder, which moves the eyepiece in or out along a threaded path. It's a very simple and lightweight design that is effective for visual observation. While different from a rack-and-pinion focuser, it holds focus well and is easy to use once you are accustomed to the twisting motion.
