What kind of mount is required for the Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100 refractor?

The Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100 is a substantial optical tube and requires a robust equatorial mount for stable imaging. A mount in the 40-50 lb payload capacity class, such as an Explore Scientific EXOS-2GT or Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro, is recommended. The specific mounting plate is not listed as an included accessory, so you must ensure you have the correct dovetail bar for your mount.

How does the FCD100 glass in this 127mm refractor compare to FPL-53?

**HOYA FCD100** is optically equivalent to Ohara's FPL-53, one of the most respected extra-low dispersion (ED) glasses available. Both are considered premium materials for building triplet objectives that achieve apochromatic correction. The final color correction depends on the entire optical design, but FCD100 glass places this telescope in the top tier of refractors.

What can I expect to see of the Orion Nebula (M42) with the Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100?

With its 127mm aperture and apochromatic optics, you will resolve fine detail within the Orion Nebula (M42). The Trapezium cluster at its heart will be cleanly split into its four primary stars, and the faint, nebulous "wings" of the nebula will show intricate structure and excellent contrast against a dark sky background.

Is the 952mm focal length of the ES 127mm FCD100 a good match for imaging Andromeda (M31) with an APS-C sensor?

The 952mm focal length provides an excellent image scale for many deep-sky objects. While the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is exceptionally large, this focal length will perfectly frame its bright core and extensive dust lanes on a typical APS-C sensor. To capture the full extent of M31 in a single frame, a focal reducer would be required.

Why is the carbon fiber tube on the Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100 important for astrophotography?

Carbon fiber has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. This means that as the ambient temperature drops overnight, the telescope tube does not shrink significantly, which keeps the focal point stable. This minimizes focus shift during a long imaging session, resulting in sharper stars from start to finish.

What accessories do I need to start using the Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100 refractor?

This product is an optical tube assembly (OTA) only. At a minimum, you will need a mount, a diagonal, eyepieces for visual use, and a finder scope. The manufacturer does not specify any included accessories, so you should plan on supplying all necessary components to complete your telescope setup.
