Tête binoculaires
Observers who try a binoviewer on the Moon rarely go back. Using both eyes recruits more of your visual processing, and the perceived improvement in detail and comfort on lunar and planetary targets is larger than the equipment alone would suggest. David Astro carries binoviewers in Canada, in stock here and shipped without customs delays for Canadian buyers.
The complication is optical path length, which many refractors cannot accommodate without help. Tell us your telescope and we will confirm whether it will reach focus.

A binoviewer splits the light into two paths, which means two matched eyepieces, half the light to each eye, and roughly 100 mm or more of added optical path.
- Perceived detail gain: Binocular summation improves contrast detection and reduces the effect of floaters and momentary eye fatigue, which is why lunar detail appears markedly better.
- Added optical path: Typically 100 mm or more. Schmidt-Cassegrains generally accommodate this through their focus range; most refractors and Newtonians do not without assistance.
- Corrector and Barlow elements: A glass path corrector or Barlow-style element moves the focal plane outward so a refractor can reach focus, while also increasing magnification.
- Matched eyepiece pairs: Two identical eyepieces are required, which effectively doubles the cost of building a working magnification range.
- Interpupillary adjustment: The eyepieces must adjust to your eye spacing, and range varies between models.
- Deep-sky limitations: Splitting light halves the brightness to each eye, so binoviewers excel on bright targets and are less advantageous on faint deep-sky objects.
Why Choose David Astro for Binoviewers
The most common binoviewer disappointment is discovering the telescope cannot reach focus with it.
- Focus reachability checked first: We calculate whether your telescope has the back-focus for a binoviewer, and specify the corrector if it does not.
- Total cost stated upfront: A binoviewer needs matched eyepiece pairs, and we set out that cost clearly rather than letting it surprise you afterwards.
- Target expectations set: Excellent on the Moon and planets, less advantageous on faint deep sky. We say so rather than overselling.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
Binoviewers in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Will my telescope reach focus with a binoviewer?
- Schmidt-Cassegrains almost always will. Refractors usually need a glass path corrector or Barlow element. Newtonians frequently cannot without modification. Tell us the telescope and we will confirm.
- Do I lose brightness?
- Each eye receives roughly half the light, but binocular summation recovers much of the perceived brightness. On the Moon and planets the net effect is strongly positive; on faint objects less so.
- Do I need two of every eyepiece?
- Yes, matched pairs. This is the main hidden cost, and it means building a binoviewer magnification range costs roughly twice what a single-eyepiece range does.
- Are they worth it for deep sky?
- On brighter clusters and nebulae, many observers find the comfort and summation worthwhile. On the faintest galaxies, splitting the light is a genuine disadvantage.
