Filtres scientifiques
Scientific filters are specified against published standards rather than against how pleasing the resulting image looks. A photometric filter's value lies entirely in how accurately its transmission curve matches the reference passband, because that is what makes your measurement comparable to everyone else's. David Astro carries scientific filters in Canada, in Canadian inventory and shipped domestically.
If you are contributing to variable star, exoplanet transit or supernova monitoring programmes, the filter standard your programme expects determines the purchase. Tell us the programme and we will match it.

These filters trade aesthetic flexibility for calibration accuracy, and the standards they follow are what allow data from different observers to be combined.
- Johnson-Cousins UBVRI: The long-established photometric system, still the reference for a great deal of variable star work and much archival comparison data.
- Sloan ugriz: The system used by large modern surveys, with passbands designed to be non-overlapping and well suited to CCD and CMOS response.
- Transmission curve accuracy: The specification that matters. A filter that is close but not matched introduces a systematic offset in your measurements.
- Exoplanet transit filters: Broad passbands chosen to maximize signal while limiting differential atmospheric extinction across the field.
- Continuum and line filters: Paired filters for measuring emission strength against nearby continuum, used in comet and nebula studies.
- Substrate quality and uniformity: Flatness and coating uniformity across the aperture, since variation translates directly into photometric error.
Why Choose David Astro for Scientific Filters
Measurement work has different requirements from imaging, and conflating the two produces data nobody can use.
- Standard matched to your programme: We will confirm whether your observing programme expects Johnson-Cousins or Sloan before you order, since they are not interchangeable.
- Imaging filters distinguished from photometric: An aesthetic LRGB set is not a photometric set, and we are clear about which is which.
- Sizing for your sensor: Uniform illumination across the measured field matters more here than in aesthetic imaging, and we size accordingly.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine filters with documented transmission characteristics and full manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian institutions and individuals.
Scientific Filters in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use LRGB filters for photometry?
- Not for calibrated work. Imaging filters are designed to look good rather than to match a standard passband, so your measurements will not be comparable to published data.
- Johnson-Cousins or Sloan?
- Whichever your observing programme specifies. Johnson-Cousins has a longer archival record for variable stars; Sloan matches modern survey data and suits silicon detector response better.
- Do I need a full filter set?
- Often not. Much variable star work is done in V alone, and many transit programmes use a single broad filter. Start with what your programme requires rather than a complete set.
- Does filter size affect photometry?
- It can, through vignetting that varies across the field. Uniform illumination over the region you measure matters, so size generously relative to your sensor.
