Lacerta

Lacerta is best known among imagers for standalone autoguiding — a self-contained unit with its own screen and processor that guides a mount without a laptop, which removes the largest and most fragile component from a field setup. The wider catalogue covers optics, correctors and focusing aids. David Astro carries Lacerta products in Canada, in Canadian inventory and shipped domestically.

Whether standalone guiding suits you depends on how the rest of your rig is controlled. Tell us your setup and we will advise.

The Lacerta Range

The line is aimed at practical field imaging, with an emphasis on removing complexity rather than adding features.

  • Standalone autoguiders: A camera, processor and display in one unit that guides the mount independently, with no computer required in the field.
  • Dithering and sequence control: Standalone units that also trigger the camera and dither between exposures, covering most of what a laptop would do.
  • Field flatteners and correctors: Correctors for refractors and Newtonians with defined back-focus figures.
  • Newtonian optics and components: Imaging Newtonians and the mechanical parts that support them.
  • Focusing masks: Bahtinov masks sized to specific apertures for unambiguous focus.
  • Cold-weather practicality: A standalone guider avoids the battery and condensation problems a laptop has outdoors in winter.

Why Choose David Astro for Lacerta

Standalone guiding is excellent for a particular kind of setup and redundant in another.

  • Honest fit assessment: If you already run a control computer at the mount, a standalone guider duplicates what you have. If you image from a laptop-free setup, it transforms it.
  • Mount compatibility confirmed: Guider output connections and mount protocols vary, and we check before you order.
  • Corrector spacing supplied: For flatteners and correctors we provide the exact back-focus figure and spacer list.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Lacerta in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Why use a standalone autoguider?
It removes the laptop from a field setup, which eliminates the largest battery drain, the most cold-sensitive component and a considerable amount of cabling. For portable imaging that is a real advantage.
Can it control my camera too?
Standalone units typically trigger exposures and dither between them, which covers most of a simple imaging sequence. Complex multi-target automation still needs a computer.
Will it work with my mount?
Guiders connect through standard guide ports on most mounts. Tell us the mount model and we will confirm the connection and any cable required.
Is it worth it if I already use a computer?
Generally not, since your existing software already guides and dithers. The value is specifically in removing the computer, not in the guiding itself.
