How accurate does polar alignment need to be?

For guided imaging, a few arcminutes is sufficient — guiding handles the residual drift. For unguided or very long focal length work, aim for under one arcminute.

What if I cannot see Polaris?

Use an electronic polar alignment camera, which plate-solves the region around the pole and works even when Polaris itself is obscured, or use drift alignment, which needs no view of the pole at all.

Why does my reticle brightness matter?

Because Polaris is only second magnitude. A reticle that is too bright washes it out entirely, which is why adjustable illumination is worth insisting on.

Will a polar scope from another mount fit?
