SharpStar builds optics aimed squarely at imagers: ED and apochromatic refractors with matched reducers, and fast hyperbolic Newtonian astrographs that deliver bright, flat fields at focal ratios where conventional Newtonians would need heavy correction. The result is a line that competes well above its price bracket for wide-field deep-sky work. David Astro carries SharpStar products in Canada, held in Canadian stock.

Each tube has a dedicated corrector with its own back-focus figure, and matching them correctly is most of what determines your corner stars. Tell us your camera and we will specify the pair.

The SharpStar Range

The catalogue splits between refractors for portable wide-field imaging and fast Newtonian astrographs for maximum light gathering for the price.

  • ED photographic refractors: Compact doublets and triplets from around 60 mm upward, designed with imaging in mind and paired with dedicated flatteners and reducers.
  • Hyperbolic Newtonian astrographs: Fast Newtonians with hyperbolic primaries and integrated correction, giving flat well-corrected fields at focal ratios around f/2.8 to f/4.
  • Matched reducers and flatteners: Model-specific correctors with defined back-focus figures, which must be hit within about a millimetre.
  • Larger aperture refractors: Triplet designs for imagers wanting more focal length while keeping a refractor's convenience and freedom from collimation.
  • Focusers and mechanical accessories: Rotators, extension tubes and dovetails designed to fit the tubes precisely.
  • Speed versus tolerance: The fastest astrographs collect light extraordinarily quickly and demand correspondingly precise collimation and spacing.

SharpStar in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Are very fast astrographs hard to use?
They are less forgiving. Collimation tolerance and back-focus tolerance both tighten as focal ratio drops, so a system that is fine at f/6 needs real care at f/3. The reward is dramatically shorter integration times.
Do I need the matched reducer?
For imaging with anything larger than a small sensor, yes. The refractors have curved focal planes without one, and using a corrector designed for a different tube gives worse results than none at all.
Refractor or hyperbolic Newtonian?
Refractor for simplicity, portability and no collimation. Newtonian for far more aperture and speed at the same cost, accepting collimation as routine maintenance.
