What is the primary use for the Baader DT-Adapter II - T-2/SP54?

The Baader DT-Adapter II is used to connect accessories with a standard T-2 (M42x0.75) thread to an eyepiece or other component that has a larger SP54 (M54) thread. Its main application is for eyepiece projection photography, particularly with Baader Hyperion eyepieces.

Which eyepieces is the Baader DT-Adapter II - T-2/SP54 designed for?

This adapter is specifically designed to work with eyepieces that feature the Baader SP54 thread system, most notably the Baader Hyperion series. It allows you to convert the eyepiece's native M54 thread into a universal T-2 connection for imaging.

How does the Baader DT-Adapter II help with eyepiece projection imaging?

The adapter is engineered to provide the shortest possible optical path between the eyepiece and the camera. This is critical for minimizing vignetting (darkening of image corners) and maintaining the highest possible image sharpness by keeping the camera sensor close to the eyepiece's focal plane.

Can I use the Baader DT-Adapter II to attach my Canon or Nikon DSLR to a Hyperion eyepiece?

Yes, but you will need one additional component. The Baader DT-Adapter II provides the necessary T-2 thread on the eyepiece side. You must then add a camera-specific T-Ring (e.g., a T-Ring for Canon EF mount) that threads onto the DT-Adapter and has the bayonet mount for your specific camera body.

What is the difference between the T-2 and SP54 threads on the Baader DT-Adapter II?

They are two different thread standards. T-2 is the de-facto standard for astronomy accessories, with a metric M42x0.75 thread. SP54 is a larger M54 thread used by Baader on their Hyperion eyepieces and other components to provide a wider, more rigid connection that avoids vignetting with large sensors.

Why is minimizing the optical path important when imaging the Moon with the Baader DT-Adapter II?

When imaging a bright, high-contrast target like the Moon or Jupiter through eyepiece projection, maintaining sharpness is paramount. The minimal length of the Baader DT-Adapter II ensures that the projected image remains as flat and well-focused as possible across your camera's sensor. A longer, non-optimized connection can introduce optical aberrations and reduce the fine detail you can capture in craters and cloud bands.
