What is a "Log-Pot" and why is it better for the Baader Illuminator?

A "Log-Pot," or logarithmic potentiometer, provides non-linear adjustment. For an astronomical illuminator, this is critical because it gives you much finer control at very low brightness levels. This prevents the common problem where the reticle is too bright even on the lowest setting, which can make faint guide stars impossible to see.

Will the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator fit my new Baader Vario-Finder?

This model is specifically designed for the Baader MicroGuide eyepiece and older Baader finders. Newer finders may use a different illumination system. Always check the accessory port on your specific finder or eyepiece to ensure it is compatible with a threaded illuminator before purchasing.

How do I install the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator on a MicroGuide eyepiece?

Installation is straightforward. Simply locate the threaded port on the body of the Baader MicroGuide eyepiece, typically covered by a small dust plug. Unscrew the plug, and then gently thread the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator into the port until it is snug. Do not overtighten.

Does the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator come with batteries?

Yes, the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator includes the required batteries, allowing you to use it right out of the box.

Why is this illuminator essential when manually guiding on a faint galaxy like NGC 7331?

When guiding on a faint star near a dim target like the galaxy NGC 7331 in Pegasus, your eye needs to be fully dark-adapted. A standard illuminator's lowest setting can be bright enough to compromise your dark adaptation and hide the star. The Baader Log-Pot Illuminator's fine control lets you dim the reticle to a barely-perceptible level, keeping the guide star visible and allowing for more accurate, long-exposure guiding.

Is the brightness continuously variable on the Baader Log-Pot Illuminator?

Yes. The illuminator features an on/off switch integrated with the rotary brightness control. You turn the dial to switch it on and then continue turning it to smoothly increase the brightness from its minimum to maximum level, with no fixed "clicks" or steps in between.
