Why is the Daystar 25mm eyepiece called an "Ortho" if it has a 62° field?

This eyepiece uses a modified orthoscopic optical design that maintains the high-contrast and low-distortion characteristics of the original while incorporating elements to expand the apparent field of view to a modern 62°. It offers the benefits of an ortho with the immersive feel of a wider-field eyepiece.

How does the Daystar 25mm Ortho perform for solar observing in a Daystar Quark?

It is an ideal match. The Daystar 25mm Ortho provides a comfortable, full-disk view of the Sun in many refractors when paired with a Quark. Its internal baffling is designed to handle the high-brightness environment of H-alpha solar viewing, maximizing contrast on prominences and surface detail.

Is the Daystar 25mm Ortho eyepiece good for anything besides solar?

Absolutely. While optimized for solar, its high-contrast, sharp optics make it an excellent eyepiece for lunar and planetary observing. The wide 62° field is also very useful for framing bright deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula (M42) or the Hercules Cluster (M13).

What is the benefit of internal baffling in the Daystar 25mm Ortho?

Internal baffling consists of sharp-edged rings and matte-blackened surfaces inside the eyepiece barrel. These features trap stray light and prevent it from reflecting off internal surfaces into your eye. This significantly darkens the background sky and increases image contrast, which is especially important for seeing faint details on bright objects like the Sun or Moon.

Will this 25mm eyepiece show me the full solar disk in my 8" f/10 SCT?

Yes. In a typical 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain with a 2000mm focal length, the Daystar 25mm Ortho will provide 80x magnification. This yields a true field of view of approximately 0.77°, which is more than enough to comfortably frame the entire solar or lunar disk (which are both about 0.5° in diameter).

How does the Daystar 25mm Ortho compare to a standard 25mm Plössl eyepiece?

The Daystar 25mm Ortho offers two main advantages over a standard 25mm Plössl. First, its 62° apparent field is noticeably wider than the typical 50-52° of a Plössl. Second, its orthoscopic design and specialized internal baffling provide higher image contrast, making it superior for detailed solar and planetary observation.
