  • Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope

The Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope is a no-compromises, integrated Hydrogen-Alpha solar telescope built entirely around its internal etalon filter, so there is no separate front filter to fit, align, or forget. It reveals prominences, solar flares, active regions, chromosphere detail, and spicules in red H-alpha light, with the Sun's appearance changing from one observing session to the next.

100mm Aperture, 1690mm Effective Focal Length

DayStar's advanced CNC machining produced a compact, lightweight 100mm aperture narrowband instrument with an effective focal length of 1690mm at f/16.9, thanks to a fully integrated 4.3x telecentric Barlow optimized for Hydrogen-Alpha. The telecentric optical design gives a full-disk field of view for visual use, and the integrated carry handle doubles as a solar finder for quick, safe alignment.

    Electronic PID-Controlled Tuning

An electronically PID-controlled thermal tuning system holds the etalon on-band and lets you shift the passband manually across a ±0.5Å range in 0.1Å steps, useful for studying different atmospheric layers and for tuning across the solar disk to the limb. After power-up or a wing shift the system settles in roughly 5-6 minutes. The integrated blocking filter is 18mm.

    DayStar's New 12:1 Dual-Speed Focuser

A helical rack-and-pinion focus mechanism with a 12:1 dual-speed reduction gives smooth, precise focusing with a locking brake and stainless-steel reduction components for durability. Focuser shaft sizes of 6mm coarse and 5/32" (4mm) fine, plus three female M4 mounting holes, make it compatible with most third-party focus motors for remote-controlled imaging.

Ready to Observe, Ready to Image

The Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope ships with mounting rings, a Vixen-compatible dovetail with a 1/4-20 tap for a camera tripod, front and rear covers, a Flat Cap for imaging, an AC power supply with US/UK/Euro/Australian plugs, a USB power cable, a 1.25" eyepiece adapter, and a durable hard case. It is compatible with the entire ecosystem of DayStar Quark accessories, including 2" eyepiece adapters, imaging tilt adapters, focal reducers, and battery packs. With rings it weighs about 8 lbs (3.6kg) and, at roughly 19 inches long, fits into an airline carry-on bag.

  • What can I see with the Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope?

Once powered on and tuned, the telescope shows the Sun's chromosphere in Hydrogen-Alpha light: prominences arcing off the limb, filaments and plages across the disk, active regions, and spicules. Because it observes the chromosphere rather than the photosphere, the view changes noticeably from one session to the next.

Do I need to add a separate solar filter to use this telescope?

No. Unlike a front-mounted filter on a standard refractor, the 100mm Sol is a fully integrated dedicated solar telescope -- the etalon and blocking filter are built into the optical path, so you only need to attach an eyepiece or an imaging camera.

How does the tuning system work?

An electronic PID-controlled thermal tuning system keeps the etalon locked on-band, with a manual ±0.5Å adjustment range in 0.1Å steps for shifting the passband between the disk and the limb. Allow roughly 5-6 minutes for the system to settle after power-up or after changing the wing shift.

Can I use my existing eyepieces and cameras with the Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope?

Yes. The telescope terminates in a standard focus drawtube with the included 1.25" eyepiece adapter, and it is compatible with the wider ecosystem of DayStar Quark accessories -- 2" eyepiece adapters, imaging tilt adapters, and focal reducers -- for both visual use and imaging.

What power does the telescope require?

The tuning electronics run on 5V USB power at 1.5A through a micro-B connector; power must be supplied for the telescope to operate. A 90-240VAC power adapter is included, with US, UK, Euro, and Australian plug adapters, so it can run from wall power or a portable USB battery pack in the field.

How is the Daystar Sol 100mm Dedicated Solar Telescope different from DayStar's Quark or Scout models?

The Quark line turns a customer-supplied refractor into an H-alpha instrument, and the Scout series is DayStar's entry-level dedicated scope. The Sol series sits above Scout as a purpose-built, no-compromises dedicated solar telescope, with the 1690mm effective focal length and integrated 4.3x telecentric Barlow matched specifically to the 100mm aperture for maximum brightness and contrast without any separate filter to align.
