What is the main advantage of the Explore Scientific 1.5mm T2 Ring for Canon?

Its primary advantage is its extremely short 1.5mm optical path. This is crucial for astrophotography setups with tight backfocus requirements, such as those using focal reducers or field flatteners, allowing you to insert other accessories like filter wheels into the optical train while still reaching focus.

When do I need this 1.5mm T2 Ring instead of a standard T-ring?

You need this specific T-ring when your imaging train's total backfocus exceeds the tolerance of your corrector. For example, if your flattener requires exactly 55mm and your camera, filter wheel, and off-axis guider add up to more than that with a standard 11mm T-ring, this 1.5mm version will help bring your total backfocus into the correct range.

Is this T2 ring compatible with Canon mirrorless cameras like the EOS R series?

No, this T2 ring is designed specifically for Canon DSLR cameras that use the EF or EF-S mount. It is not compatible with Canon's mirrorless RF or EF-M mounts.

What does the M42x0.75 thread on the Explore Scientific T2 Ring connect to?

The M42x0.75 thread is the universal "T-thread" standard in astronomy. It connects to the telescope side of your imaging train, such as a field flattener, coma corrector, off-axis guider, or a 2" T-adapter that fits into your telescope's focuser.

How does the 1.5mm light path of this T2 Ring help when imaging the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with a fast refractor?

When imaging a large target like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with a fast refractor, a field flattener is essential for sharp stars to the edge. These flatteners have strict backfocus needs (typically 55mm). The 1.5mm path of this ring gives you the space needed to add a light pollution filter in a filter drawer, which is critical for bringing out faint detail in M31 from suburban skies, without violating the flattener's required spacing.

Is the stainless steel construction of this T2 ring better than aluminum?

Yes. Stainless steel offers superior rigidity compared to aluminum. This minimizes the risk of flexure or tilt, especially when using a heavy DSLR camera, which can cause elongated stars in the corners of your images. The steel threads are also more resistant to wear and stripping over time.
