My Lunt LS60THa already has a clamshell. Why would I need to buy this one?

This Lunt Clamshell is sold primarily as a replacement part for a lost or damaged original ring. It is also useful for astronomers who wish to have a second mounting system for different setups without having to move the original clamshell.

How do I mount my LS80THa to a camera tripod using this Lunt Clamshell?

The clamshell features a standard 1/4-20 tapped hole in its base. You can thread the mounting screw from any standard photographic or video tripod directly into the clamshell for a simple and stable alt-azimuth setup.

Can I attach a Tele Vue Sol-Searcher to the Lunt Clamshell?

Yes. The Lunt Clamshell has a dedicated slot at the top specifically designed to accept the base of the Tele Vue Sol-Searcher sun finder, allowing for quick and safe alignment with the Sun.

Will the Lunt Clamshell fit my LS50THa or LS100THa telescope?

No, this clamshell is specifically designed for the tube diameter of the Lunt LS60THa and LS80THa models only. It will not fit other telescopes in the Lunt lineup.

Does the Lunt Clamshell include a dovetail bar?

No, a dovetail bar is not included. The clamshell provides the 1/4-20 threaded hole needed to attach the telescope to a separate Vixen or Losmandy-style dovetail bar of your choice.

What does the "1/4-20 tapped base" on the Lunt Clamshell mean?

This refers to the industry-standard screw thread size used on virtually all photographic tripods. The "1/4" is the diameter in inches, and the "20" refers to 20 threads per inch. This ensures compatibility with a wide range of common mounting hardware.
