What is the primary use for this M54 to M48 adapter?

This adapter is designed to connect a component with male M48 threads (like a filter drawer or camera nosepiece) to a component that has female M54 threads (like many larger focusers or field flatteners). Its key feature is that it does so while only using 2.0mm of backfocus.

Will this 2.0mm adapter help me connect my M48 camera to a refractor with an M54 focuser drawtube?

Yes, this is an ideal scenario for this adapter. It allows you to step down the M54 thread on your focuser or field flattener to the more common M48 thread on your camera or filter wheel, ensuring you can reach the correct spacing for sharp stars across the field.

My imaging train for my SCT has very little backfocus tolerance. Is this M54 to M48 adapter a good choice?

Absolutely. Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, especially with reducers, have strict backfocus requirements. Because this adapter only adds 2.0mm to the optical path, it is one of the thinnest options available, making it perfect for SCT imaging trains where every millimeter is critical.

What does the 0.75mm thread pitch on this adapter mean?

The 0.75mm pitch is the standard for M48 and M54 photographic threads in astronomy. This ensures the adapter will be compatible with the vast majority of astronomy cameras, filter wheels, off-axis guiders, and flatteners from major manufacturers.

Is the adapter's 2.0mm thickness the same as its optical length?

Yes. The 2.0mm thickness measurement refers to the amount of backfocus, or optical path length, that the adapter's body adds to your imaging train when fully threaded into place.

Why is a short 4mm thread length important?

The 4mm thread length provides a secure connection without being excessively long. This prevents the adapter's threads from bottoming out inside components that may have shallow female threads, which could otherwise prevent a flush, tight connection.
