  • ALTO-3L Telescope Cover Motor for GIOTTO 560mm

The PrimaLuceLab ALTO-3L Telescope Cover Motor transforms the GIOTTO 560mm flat field generator into a fully remote-controlled motorized cap for large-aperture instruments. Powered by a standard 12V source, it opens and closes your telescope for automated flat calibration frames, removing the need to be physically present at the telescope to prepare for an imaging session.

Motorize Your GIOTTO 560mm for Automated Flat Calibration

For remote or automated observatories, the ALTO-3L is the key to a fully autonomous calibration workflow. It mechanically operates the GIOTTO 560mm, allowing you to remotely command the cover to open for imaging and close to take flat frames at dawn. This eliminates one of the last manual steps in remote astrophotography.

The ALTO-3L body includes several M6 threaded holes for attachment to a custom support adapter on your telescope. Note that while it functions perfectly as a dust cover and flat panel, the assembly does not create a light-proof seal; for this reason, it is not recommended for taking dark frames.

12V-Powered Control: USB-C for ASCOM, WiFi for Mobile

The ALTO-3L offers multiple connection methods to integrate with any setup. A USB-C port provides a robust, wired connection to an EAGLE control unit or any Windows computer, enabling control via PrimaLuceLab's PLAY software or third-party applications through its ASCOM CoverCalibrator driver.

For computer-free operation, the ALTO-3L can broadcast its own WiFi network. You can connect directly to it with a smartphone or tablet and use the web-based Virtual HandPad to open or close the cover—a perfect solution for quick setup or when you just need to cap the telescope at the end of the night without booting up a full PC.

Simplified Cabling with 12V Power and USB Passthrough

To combat cable clutter and snagging, the ALTO-3L is engineered with integrated power and data passthrough. Instead of running separate cables to both the ALTO motor and the GIOTTO flat panel, you connect the GIOTTO's 12V power and USB cables directly to passthrough ports on the ALTO itself.

A single 12V power cable and one USB cable are then run from the ALTO to your main control system. This design significantly reduces the number of wires at the front of your telescope, leading to a cleaner, more reliable, and easier-to-manage imaging rig.

  • How do I connect the ALTO-3L to my computer and the GIOTTO 560mm?

The ALTO-3L is designed to simplify cable management. You connect your GIOTTO 560mm's power and USB cables directly to the passthrough ports on the ALTO-3L. Then, you only need to run one 12V power cable and one USB-C cable from the ALTO-3L back to your EAGLE or Windows computer.

Can I use the ALTO-3L to take dark frames with my GIOTTO 560mm?

No, this is not recommended. The ALTO-3L and GIOTTO 560mm assembly functions as a dust cover and flat panel, but it does not create a perfectly light-tight seal. For dark frames, it is best to maintain a separate library of darks or use a dedicated, sealed telescope cap.

What software is compatible with the ALTO-3L telescope cover motor?

You have several options. You can use PrimaLuceLab's dedicated PLAY astrophotography software for native control and calibration wizards. Alternatively, you can control it from most third-party Windows imaging software (like N.I.N.A. or SGP) via its ASCOM CoverCalibrator driver.

Do I need a computer to control the ALTO-3L?

No. The ALTO-3L can generate its own WiFi network. You can connect to it with any smartphone or tablet and use the browser-based Virtual HandPad to open and close the cover, making it easy to operate without a dedicated computer.

I have a large PlaneWave CDK with a 560mm aperture in a remote observatory. Is the ALTO-3L a good solution for automating my morning flats?

Yes, absolutely. The ALTO-3L is designed specifically for this scenario. Paired with the GIOTTO 560mm, it allows you to fully automate your flat frame calibration sequence. You can program your acquisition software to close the cover and turn on the GIOTTO at dawn to capture flats without any manual intervention.

My imaging setup with an EAGLE is already complex. How does the ALTO-3L help with cable management for my GIOTTO 560mm?

The ALTO-3L is a significant improvement for cable management. Its power and USB passthrough ports mean you only run one power and one data cable from your EAGLE to the front of the scope. The GIOTTO plugs directly into the ALTO, keeping the connection short and contained, which reduces the risk of cable snags during slewing.
