Stop settling for soft stars or mushy planetary detail. If your Schmidt-Cassegrain no longer delivers sharp, high-contrast views even on nights of good seeing, misalignment of the secondary mirror is the most likely cause. At David Astro, we provide precision collimation to restore your SCT to factory-spec performance.

Note: Shipping costs are not included. We recommend local drop-off to ensure alignment remains intact.

Why Professional Collimation Matters

An SCT typically works at f/10 with a strongly magnifying secondary mirror, which amplifies even a tiny tilt into visible loss of sharpness. Because collimation is judged on a star at high magnification, it is difficult to get right without a controlled setup and steady conditions. Our technicians address every element of the optical path:

  • Secondary Mirror Alignment: We adjust the secondary so that the out-of-focus star pattern is perfectly concentric, then refine it in focus at high power.
  • Corrector Plate Check: We verify that the corrector is seated, centered and in its factory rotation index, since an incorrectly positioned corrector degrades the image in ways collimation alone cannot fix.
  • Primary Mirror and Focus Mechanism: We check the focus mechanism and mirror locks (on models so equipped) to make sure the primary holds its position once focus is reached.
  • Absolute Optical Perfection: We align every system to its highest theoretical limit, ensuring maximum contrast for both high-magnification planetary viewing and deep-sky astrophotography.

Our Comprehensive Service Includes:

  • Artificial Star Testing: We collimate on an artificial star at high magnification, independent of weather and seeing, for repeatable, precise results.
  • Mirror Flop and Image Shift Check: We evaluate how much the image shifts when focusing and when the tube changes orientation, and advise on solutions such as mirror locks or an external focuser.
  • Optical Path Audit: We inspect for loose baffles, pinched optics, a loose secondary holder or worn collimation screws that a standard collimation might miss.
  • Educational opportunity (optional): Touching up collimation is a normal part of owning an SCT. We will walk you through the star test and the secondary adjustment so you can maintain optimal performance on your own.

Is it time for a service?

If a slightly defocused star shows a "donut" with the dark shadow off-center, if bright stars show flares or tails when in focus, or if planets never snap into sharp focus, your optics are likely misaligned. Transport, bumps and temperature swings are the leading causes of SCT misalignment.

Compatible with Celestron and Meade Schmidt-Cassegrains, including EdgeHD and ACF models.

Trust David Astro to fine-tune your equipment, ensuring that every stargazing session is as breathtaking as possible.
