What is the purpose of the two different lamps in the Shelyak Alpy Calibration Module?

The module contains two lamps for two distinct calibration tasks. The Argon-Neon (Ar-Ne) lamp produces sharp emission lines at known wavelengths, which are used to accurately calibrate the wavelength scale of your spectrum. The halogen lamp produces a continuous, uniform light source used to create flat-field frames, which correct for pixel sensitivity variations and dust on the sensor.

How does the Alpy Calibration Module create dark frames without a separate shutter?

The module uses its internal servo-controlled screen. When you activate the "Dark" mode, the screen moves into the telescope's light path, completely blocking incoming light from the sky. With both internal lamps switched off, this allows the spectrograph to capture a dark frame under the same conditions as your light frames, without you needing to manually cap the telescope.

Can I control the Shelyak Alpy Calibration Module from my computer?

Yes. The module is designed for remote operation. It features two 12V trigger inputs that allow you to switch each lamp on and off using a relay box or similar device controlled by your PC. This enables you to integrate the calibration process into automated imaging sequences in software like PRISM or MaxIm DL.

I'm measuring the radial velocity of the star Arcturus (Alpha Boötis) with my UVEX spectrograph. How does this module improve my accuracy?

For precise radial velocity measurements, a stable and immediate wavelength calibration is critical. The Alpy Calibration Module allows you to take an Argon-Neon calibration spectrum immediately before or after your spectrum of Arcturus without touching the instrument. This minimizes errors from instrument flexure or temperature changes, ensuring your wavelength solution is as accurate as possible for measuring the Doppler shift in the star's spectral lines.

My observatory is remote. How does the Alpy Calibration Module fit into an automated imaging sequence with an Alpy 600?

The module is ideal for remote observatories. Using its 12V inputs, you can script the entire calibration process. A typical automated sequence would be: End of Night (Telescope slews to park), Dark Frames (Script moves module's screen into place), Flat Frames (Script activates halogen lamp), and Calibration Frames (Script activates Argon-Neon lamp). This allows for fully unattended data acquisition and calibration.

What power supply do I need for the Shelyak Alpy Calibration Module?

You will need an external power supply that can provide at least 12V DC at 1A. The power connector type is a standard center-positive barrel plug. This is a common power supply type for many astronomy accessories.
