How does the Feather Touch Micro Focuser for the Meade 14.0" SCT reduce image shift?

Image shift is caused by the primary mirror tilting as it moves. The stock focuser's coarse action can easily trigger this movement. The Feather Touch Micro Focuser allows for extremely fine, smooth adjustments, enabling you to achieve critical focus without applying enough force to cause the mirror to shift, keeping your target stable in the eyepiece.

Is the Starlight Instruments Micro Focuser difficult to install on my Meade 14.0" LX200GPS?

No, installation is straightforward and can typically be done with simple hand tools. The Feather Touch Micro Focuser is designed as a direct replacement for the factory knob assembly on all Meade 14.0" SCTs. Detailed instructions are available for download.

What is the benefit of a dual-speed focuser on a Meade 14.0" SCT for planetary imaging?

A Meade 14.0" SCT has a long focal length, making the "critical focus zone" incredibly small when imaging planets like Jupiter or Saturn. The dual-speed control of the Feather Touch Micro allows you to make minute adjustments with the fine-focus knob to precisely nail that zone, which is often impossible with the stock single-speed focuser, resulting in significantly sharper images.

Can I motorize this Feather Touch Micro Focuser for my Meade 14.0" SCT?

Yes. Starlight Instruments offers motor options, such as the Handy Stepper Motor (HSM20), that are designed to clamp directly onto the Feather Touch Micro Focuser. This allows you to add automated, computer-controlled focusing for advanced imaging applications.

Will this focuser help me achieve critical focus on faint DSOs like the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) with my Meade 14.0" SCT?

Absolutely. For faint deep-sky objects, achieving the tightest possible stars is key to resolving detail and maximizing contrast. The precision of the Feather Touch Micro Focuser allows you to make tiny adjustments to get perfect, point-like stars across the field, which is especially critical when using imaging systems with very small pixels.

Why is this a better solution than an external Crayford focuser for a Meade 14.0" SCT?

While an external Crayford is a good option, it adds significant length and weight to the optical train, which can affect balance and clearance on a fork-mounted SCT. The Feather Touch Micro Focuser provides the same level of fine-focus control by upgrading the telescope's native mechanism, adding no extra weight or length to the back of the scope.
