The key feature of this eyepiece line is the 66° apparent field of view. This represents a significant increase in observable sky compared to the 50-52° field of a typical Plössl eyepiece, without requiring a move to a 2" focuser. This wider perspective makes it easier to locate objects and appreciate the context of targets like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the Pleiades (M45) against the background starfield.
Each eyepiece is built into a durable aluminum 1.25" barrel that is compatible with virtually any telescope focuser. The interior of the housing is blackened to absorb stray light, preventing internal reflections from reducing image contrast. This ensures a dark background, making faint details on planets or in nebulosity more apparent. The barrel is also threaded to accept standard 1.25" astronomy filters, allowing you to easily add a moon filter or nebula filter to your setup.
Compared to a standard 52° Plössl of the same focal length, the SVBONY 66° eyepiece offers a noticeably more expansive view. While a Plössl is a sharp, high-contrast workhorse, its narrower field can feel restrictive on large deep-sky objects.
For an 8" f/10 SCT with a 2000mm focal length, the 9mm SVBONY 66° eyepiece would provide 222x magnification, which is an excellent power for viewing details on Jupiter and Saturn. The 6mm eyepiece would yield 333x, which may be too high for average seeing conditions.
The 66° field of view allows you to see more of the surrounding nebulosity and the "wings" of the Orion Nebula (M42) at the same time you are observing the central Trapezium star cluster. A narrower eyepiece would require you to pan around to see the full extent of the object.
The main advantage is the significantly wider 66° apparent field of view compared to the ~52° field of a Plössl. This provides a more immersive, "spacewalk" feeling and makes it easier to frame large celestial objects without having to move the telescope as often.
