How does the Explore Scientific 6.5mm LER eyepiece perform on Jupiter with an 8" SCT?

On an 8" f/10 SCT, the 6.5mm eyepiece yields approximately 313x magnification. This is an excellent power for observing Jupiter's cloud bands, the Great Red Spot, and shadow transits of its moons, provided the atmospheric seeing is stable. The 82° field will comfortably frame the planet and all four Galilean moons.

Is the 16.8mm eye relief on the Explore Scientific 6.5mm eyepiece enough for viewing with glasses?

Yes. With 16.8mm of long eye relief, this eyepiece is specifically designed for comfort, especially for eyeglass wearers. You should be able to see the entire 82° field of view without needing to remove your glasses, which is essential if you have astigmatism.

What does "Argon-Purged" mean for the Explore Scientific 82° 6.5mm eyepiece?

"Argon-Purged" means the interior of the eyepiece has been filled with inert argon gas and sealed with O-rings. This makes the eyepiece fully waterproof and prevents internal optics from fogging up in cold or humid weather. It also protects the delicate internal coatings from dust and moisture over the long term.

Will the 6.5mm focal length be too much magnification for my 6" f/5 Newtonian when viewing the Orion Nebula (M42)?

A 6" f/5 Newtonian has a focal length of about 762mm, so the 6.5mm eyepiece would provide around 117x magnification. While this is excellent for resolving the Trapezium cluster at the heart of the Orion Nebula (M42), it will be too powerful to fit the entire nebula in the field of view. For a full view of M42, a lower-power eyepiece (24mm or longer) would be more suitable.

What is the benefit of the 82° field of view on the 6.5mm eyepiece compared to a standard Plössl?

A standard Plössl eyepiece has an apparent field of view around 50°-52°. The 82° field of the Explore Scientific eyepiece provides a much wider, more immersive window onto the sky at the same magnification. This makes objects feel less constrained and allows you to more easily use averted vision to spot faint details.

How do I clean the Explore Scientific 6.5mm waterproof eyepiece?

Because the eyepiece is internally sealed, you only need to clean the outer lens surfaces. First, use a blower bulb to remove any loose dust or grit. Then, if needed, apply a few drops of a quality lens cleaning solution to a microfiber cloth and gently wipe the lens in a circular motion from the center to the edge.
