Sky of the Month: July 2026
July is the month astrophotographers wait for. The Milky Way climbs back into the evening sky, astronomical darkness slowly returns after the solstice, and some of summer's best nebulae culminate almost overhead. There's one catch: the Moon. Time your sessions well and July becomes one of the year's best imaging months. Time them poorly and you'll spend hours fighting sky glow.
The galactic core stays frustratingly low from Canadian latitudes, topping out around 15.5 degrees, so this isn't a Sagittarius month. It's a Summer Triangle month. The objects in Lyra, Vulpecula, Cygnus and Sagitta ride high nearly all night and reward both broadband and narrowband work. All times in this article are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC-4). Adjust for your time zone accordingly.
1. At a Glance
- New moon falls on July 14 at 05:43 EDT, almost perfectly aligned with peak altitude for M39. That's your best broadband night of the month.
- Full moon is July 29 at 10:35 EDT. Several objects hit their altitude peak right around that date. Don't be fooled by the numbers: see the deep sky section for the real story.
- Planets are quiet. Nothing at opposition or elongation. Deep sky wins this month by a wide margin.
- Two meteor showers peak July 30, but a fully illuminated moon wipes out both. Skip them and save your energy for the Perseids.
- The Perseids begin July 17 and peak August 12 under a moonless sky. That's the one to plan around.
- 10P/Tempel is the comet worth watching, magnitude 7.1 and brightening, binocular-visible in Capricornus.
- 169P/NEAT is brightening fast but its best night falls one day before full moon. Patience required.
- True darkness runs from about 3h15m on July 1 to nearly 5 hours by July 31. The second half of the month is noticeably more productive for deep-sky work.
2. Moon Phases
The moon situation this month is actually quite good. You get a clean dark-sky window centered on July 14, and the full moon lands at the very end of the month on July 29, far enough away to give you two solid weeks of productive imaging before things get bright.

3. Understanding Twilight
Every "best night" and "visible after dark" claim in this calendar depends on one thing: how dark the sky actually gets. Darkness isn't a switch, it's four stages. July evenings are long. Sunset is around 8:30pm EDT but your camera has no business pointing at a nebula until well past 11pm. Here's why, and what the sky is actually doing in those hours between sunset and darkness.

Look at the darkest band on the diagram above: it's noticeably thinner at the start of July than at the end. We're still close enough to the summer solstice that true darkness is in short supply, but each week claws a little more of it back.
Still looks like late evening. Only Venus and Jupiter are visible. Your sensor will be completely overwhelmed. Use this time to set up, cool your camera down, and do your polar alignment.
The sky darkens noticeably but there's still a significant glow near the horizon. Useful for planetary work and bright double stars. Deep-sky imaging will show a strong gradient, particularly toward the south and west.
This is the threshold that matters. The sky is dark enough for serious deep-sky imaging. At 45°N in early July, you're waiting until around 11:15pm EDT for this. The further north you are, the later it arrives, and in parts of northern Canada, it never quite gets there in midsummer.
In early July at 45°N, you get roughly 11:15pm to 2:45am EDT, about three and a half hours. That's enough for a solid session if you're efficient. By late July the window expands toward five hours as the nights finally start lengthening again after the solstice.
4. Planets
No oppositions, no elongations, nothing demanding your attention this month. If you're torn between planets and deep sky, deep sky wins by a wide margin in July. That said, there are a few things worth noting.
- VenusMagnitude -4.1. Hard to miss, but low, sets around 22:39 EDT. Catch it early. The crescent moon passes 1.79° from Venus on July 17, a nice naked-eye pairing if you're outside at dusk.
- JupiterVisible but not doing anything special. Bright enough for casual viewing. Moon passes 1.89° away on July 15.
- SaturnRises around midnight EDT and is well placed in the southeast before dawn. The rings have opened back to 9° after nearly disappearing last fall. Worth a look through any telescope.
- MarsMagnitude +1.3 in Taurus, glowing orange in the east at dawn. Still on the far side of its orbit, only 4.5 arcseconds wide in a telescope, not worth serious imaging effort yet.
- UranusMagnitude 5.8, sitting 5° west of Mars in Taurus. Binoculars will show it as a faint blue-green dot.
- NeptuneMagnitude 7.9, about 10° west of Saturn. You'll need a finder chart to pick it out from the background stars.
- MercuryLost in the glare of sunrise. Not worth attempting.
5. Meteor Showers
Two showers peak this month and both are effectively ruined by the full moon. Don't waste a dark-sky night on them. The one worth your attention is the Perseids, which begin their run on July 17 and build toward what should be an excellent peak in August.

6. Deep Sky Highlights
The Summer Triangle dominates July. Most of the best targets this month sit in or near Lyra, Vulpecula, Cygnus, and Sagitta, all of them riding high and well placed for imaging from Canadian latitudes. The Sagittarius objects are lower and more challenging, but still workable if you have a clear southern horizon.
A note on the dates below: best-night dates are altitude-based and don't factor in moon phase. For most objects, the pattern is the same this month: broadband around July 14, narrowband around July 31. Why does narrowband hold up near full moon? Ha and OIII filters block most artificial and lunar light, passing only the specific emission wavelengths of the nebula. Open clusters and galaxies don't benefit from that trick: those are broadband-only targets and need a dark sky.
M39 Open Cluster · Cygnus
Magnitude 4.6. Peaks at 87° on July 14, which is also new moon. This is the cleanest imaging night of the month: dark sky and excellent altitude at the same time. If you're looking for a target to anchor your new moon session, start here.
M29 Open Cluster · Cygnus
Magnitude 6.6. In season nearly all month: altitude is excellent whether you go July 14 or July 31. Since it's an open cluster, shoot it broadband around July 14. The July 31 peak falls two days after full moon and isn't worth the trade-off.
M57, Ring Nebula Planetary Nebula · Lyra
Magnitude 8.8. One of the most satisfying targets in the summer sky: compact, bright, and unmistakable. Altitude peaks July 31 near full moon, but as a planetary nebula it responds well to Ha and OIII filtration. Broadband: July 14. Narrowband: July 31 works fine.
M56 Globular Cluster · Lyra
Magnitude 8.4. In season all 31 nights. Globular clusters don't benefit from narrowband: shoot this one broadband around July 14 and move on.
M27, Dumbbell Nebula Planetary Nebula · Vulpecula
Magnitude 7.4. The largest and brightest planetary nebula visible from Canada. If you've never imaged it, this month is a good time to start. It's forgiving on exposure, looks good in both broadband and narrowband, and sits high enough all month to give you clean frames. Broadband: July 14. Narrowband: July 31.
M71 Globular Cluster · Sagitta
Magnitude 6.1. In season all 31 nights. A compact, moderately condensed globular, broadband only. Aim for July 14.
M17, Checkmark Nebula Emission Nebula · Sagittarius
Magnitude 7.0. This one requires some patience from Canadian latitudes: it tops out around 28°, which means you're imaging through a lot more atmosphere than the Cygnus targets above. That said, it's a bright emission nebula that responds beautifully to narrowband filtration, and the structure is impressive. Worth the effort if you have a clear southern horizon. Broadband: July 14. Narrowband: July 27.
M16, Eagle Nebula Emission Nebula · Serpens
Magnitude 6.0. Same altitude situation as M17: low, but workable. Home to the Pillars of Creation, which are essentially invisible in broadband but reveal stunning detail in Ha. If narrowband is in your toolkit, this is one of the most rewarding targets of the summer. Broadband: July 14. Narrowband: July 27.
Most targets this month culminate near the meridian and sit high in the sky, some close to vertical. Before your session, check for potential collisions between your telescope and your tripod legs or pier. If you're running tight, a pier extension is the right fix.
One more thing worth checking. Dew shields lose most of their effectiveness when the telescope is pointed nearly straight up. If dew is a factor where you observe, this is the month to add active dew prevention to your setup. A dew heater on the objective and on your guide scope will keep you imaging through the night instead of packing up early.
7. Comets
A quiet month for comets overall. Nothing is putting on a show, but 10P/Tempel is worth binoculars and has two interesting framing opportunities this month. 169P/NEAT is one to watch as it brightens, just not this month.

8. Where to Go
The dark-sky window around July 11 to 17 is worth driving for. Here's one solid option per province to get you away from city light. All of these are well-established sites used regularly by amateur astronomers.
