The number that matters most is pixel scale in arcseconds per pixel, which is pixel size divided by focal length and multiplied by 206.265. Aim for roughly 1 to 2 arcseconds per pixel under typical Canadian seeing.
- Cooled deep-sky cameras: Thermoelectric cooling holds the sensor well below ambient, which suppresses dark current and makes calibration frames repeatable across a session.
- Monochrome versus colour: Mono with filters collects more photons per pixel and gives higher resolution and full narrowband capability; one-shot colour is simpler and captures all channels at once, which suits limited clear nights.
- Planetary and lunar cameras: Small, fast, uncooled sensors that capture hundreds of frames per second so that lucky imaging can select the sharpest moments of seeing.
- Guide cameras: Small sensitive sensors with high frame rates, paired with a guide scope or off-axis guider to correct mount error in real time.
- Sensor format: Larger sensors demand a corrector that covers the full field and filters sized to match, so a full-frame camera has consequences well beyond its own price.
- Read noise and full-well depth: Low read noise permits short sub-exposures under light pollution; deeper full wells preserve bright stars from saturating.

- Monochrome or one-shot colour?
- One-shot colour if clear nights are scarce and you want a finished image quickly. Monochrome if you want maximum resolution and narrowband imaging from a light-polluted site, accepting that each target takes several times longer.
- What pixel size should I choose?
- Divide pixel size in microns by focal length in millimetres and multiply by 206.265. Target 1 to 2 arcseconds per pixel. Short focal lengths need small pixels; long focal lengths need larger ones.
- Do I need cooling in a Canadian winter?
- Cooling still matters, because its real value is holding a stable, repeatable temperature so your dark frames match your lights. Ambient cold alone drifts throughout the night.
- Will you help with spacing and drivers?
- Yes. We supply the back-focus calculation with the camera and help with driver and capture software setup after it arrives.
