What is the difference between the iOptron AZ Mount Pro versions?
All three versions use the identical AZ Mount Pro head, featuring a 33 lb primary payload, an internal battery rated for 10 hours at 20ºC, GPS, WiFi, and the Go2Nova 8407 hand controller.
- The LiteRoc Tripod version includes a 1.75" stainless steel tripod and a 10 lb counterweight.
- The Tri-Pier version includes the iOptron Tri-Pier and a 10 lb counterweight.
- The Head Only version does not include a tripod, pier, or counterweight.
How does the "Level and Go" alignment on the AZ Mount Pro work?
You level the mount with its built-in level indicator and turn it on. The 32-channel GPS receiver and position and angular detection sensors let it calculate its global position and the telescope orientation. It then slews to an easily identifiable bright object; you confirm the object is centered, which activates tracking and GoTo.
How does the secondary payload saddle work on the AZ Mount Pro?
The optional secondary Vixen-style saddle (#8953) slides onto the counterweight shaft. After mounting the second OTA, you align it with the primary by rotating it around the shaft, and two M6 set screws adjust its tilt. iOptron's spec gives a 10 lb secondary payload; the manual says 5kg (11lbs).
How do I control the iOptron AZ Mount Pro with my smartphone?
The AZ Mount Pro has a built-in WiFi adapter. Connect your smartphone or tablet to the mount's Wi-Fi network (the SSID is shown, and can be changed, in the hand controller's Wi-Fi Option menu). iOptron Commander and SkySafari work for wireless control; for a manual setup such as SkySafari, the menu shows the IP address and socket.
How long does the AZ Mount Pro's internal battery last?
The built-in 11.1V, 4.4Ah Li-ion battery provides up to 10 hours of runtime at 20ºC on a full charge. A slowly flashing battery status LED means about 30 minutes remain. Charge only with the included charger, never below 0°C, and fully charge the battery every 6 months if the mount is not used.
Can I do astrophotography with the iOptron AZ Mount Pro?
The AZ Mount Pro is an altazimuth mount and is not meant for imaging. Altazimuth tracking does not compensate for field rotation, which limits long exposures; an equatorial mount avoids it.
Do I need a counterweight for the AZ Mount Pro?
A small and light scope (a few pounds) can be used without a counterweight, but a counterweight is always helpful to balance the OTA for smooth and accurate GoTo and tracking. Estimate it by making the torque (weight times distance to the center) of the payload and the counterweight equal or close. A 10 lb counterweight is included with the LiteRoc and Tri-Pier versions.
Is the aluminum carrying case included with all versions of the AZ Mount Pro?
Yes. iOptron ships the mount head in an aluminum carrying case with the controller cable, the AC charger and the RS232 serial cable, and that head package is part of every version.
