How does the 95mm retractable rear tube on the Askar 185APO work?
Rotate the rudder-type locking ring, pull the retractable part out completely (or push it in), and lock the ring again. Contracted, the 185APO can be used with a binoviewer; stretched, it takes the 0.8x reducer, 1x flattener or a 2" diagonal.
Can I use a binoviewer with the Askar 185APO for planetary observing?
Yes. With the rear lens tube contracted, the 185APO can be used with a binoviewer for visual observation.
What is the difference between the optional 1x flattener and 0.8x reducer for the Askar 185APO?
The 1x flattener corrects field curvature and coma across a 44mm image circle without changing the telescope's native 1295mm focal length or f/7 ratio. It is ideal for smaller targets where maximum image scale is desired. The 0.8x reducer also flattens the field but shortens the focal length to 1036mm and the focal ratio to a faster f/5.6, providing a wider field of view and reducing exposure times. This makes it better for large nebulae and galaxies.
How would the Askar 185APO frame the Orion Nebula (M42) with a full-frame camera?
At its native 1295mm focal length (f/7), a full-frame sensor would frame the core of the Orion Nebula (M42) and its surrounding stars, but would cut off the wider nebulosity. To capture the entire complex in a single shot, the optional 0.8x reducer is recommended. At the reduced 1036mm (f/5.6) a full-frame sensor covers about 2.0 x 1.3 degrees, enough for the main nebula with the Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977) at the edge.
Does the Askar 185APO come with a finder scope?
No, a finder scope is not included. However, the telescope is equipped with two finder bases, one on each side of the 3.5" focuser, allowing you to mount your preferred finder or a small guide scope. The 400mm handle's slot can also serve as a finder base.
Is the focuser on the 185APO compatible with an electronic focuser?
Yes, the 3.5" rack and pinion focuser is compatible with most motorized focusers on the market, and the manual marks the screw positions for an electric focusing bracket.
What are the adapters on the rear of the Askar 185APO used for?
The focuser ends in a 2" adapter and a 1.25" adapter for 2" or 1.25" diagonals and eyepieces. For imaging, these adapters are removed to thread on the optional flattener or reducer.
How do I transport the Askar 185APO?
An aluminum case is included. Contract the dew shield (and the rear tube) for the shortest overall length of 1081mm, and lift the 14.9 kg OTA by the handle.
What is the purpose of the long 400mm handle?
The extended 400mm handle is for carrying and mounting, and its special slot design lets it serve as a base for a finder scope.
