Launch Visual AssistantThe Baader Hyperion 68° 24mm Eyepiece delivers an expansive 68° apparent field of view through an 8-element, 5-group optical design, with 17mm of eye relief and a 28.5mm field stop. The Hyperion series is designed as a way to get more from a telescope than the simple eyepieces often supplied with it. Both 1.25" and 2" barrels are included, and M43 and SP54 system threads allow classical and afocal eyepiece projection. Unlike the shorter Hyperion focal lengths, the 24mm focal length is not variable.
The Hyperion 24mm eyepiece is engineered around an 8-element, 5-group optical system that produces a wide 68° apparent field of view. It is the longest focal length of the Hyperion 68° fixed focal length series, which runs from 5mm to 24mm.
Eye relief is 17mm and the field stop diameter is 28.5mm. The folding eyecup sits on the M43 thread; it can be stored folded down, especially for persons who wear glasses, or folded up.
Every glass surface in the Hyperion 24mm is treated with Baader's proprietary Phantom Group multi-coatings. This 7-layer broadband coating was worked out for each type of glass in the Hyperion eyepieces, with extremely low residual reflection.
The coatings are optimised to be most effective at about 520nm, in the green region where the night-adapted eye is most sensitive. A strong green reflex shows light between 500 and 550 nm being reflected and lost, while Phantom Group coatings appear almost colourless, so that the least amount of light is lost for a night-adapted eye.
The Hyperion 24mm comes with both 1.25" and 2" barrels, so it fits 1.25" and 2" focusers and diagonals. Its slip protection is a classic undercut. The drawing gives 52.9mm for the body above the reference plane, 24mm for the 1.25" barrel and 42.9mm for the 2" barrel.
The inner connections are M28.5 and M48, so 1.25" and 2" filters can be used. Hyperion eyepieces are opened only at the M48 thread at the top of the 1.25" barrel to remove the first group of lenses, with the 24mm as the exception; its focal length cannot be changed with fine tuning rings.
All Hyperion eyepieces are suitable for afocal and classical eyepiece projection. Removing the rubber eyecup and the large silicone thread-protecting ring reveals two male system threads: M43 and SP54.
The M43 thread is intended for classic eyepiece projection, with the Hyperion M43/T-2 ring (#2958080), to which Baader Astro T-2 System parts and a T-2 camera ring for an SLR or DSLR camera can be attached. The larger SP54 thread is designed for afocal projection, allowing you to connect digital cameras or camcorders where the lens cannot be removed, using Baader DT-rings such as SP54/M28 (#2958028) or SP54/M37 (#2958037) with the Hyperion 11mm extension ring (#2958090). Unlike other Hyperion models, the 24mm focal length is fixed and cannot be altered with fine-tuning rings; its system threads remain available for imaging.
The Hyperion 24mm has an outer diameter of 58mm and a net weight of 0.34 kg (Baader's design data gives 311g for the eyepiece). It is not in the parfocal group of the series, so it needs refocusing when exchanged with the other Hyperion focal lengths.
The eyepiece includes a folding rubber eyecup and three dust caps to protect the optics during storage and transport. A soft-leather bag is also included for added protection. The winged rubber eyeshield of the Hyperion 68° eyepieces is ideal for binocular use.
Our listing ships the eyepiece with its soft-leather bag and three dust caps. Baader's specification lists the dust caps as 31.8mm (1.25"), 45mm (2") and 46.5mm (fits over the eyecup), and the folding eyecup sits on the M43 thread.
Yes. The inner connections of the Hyperion 24mm are M28.5 and M48, so it takes 1.25" and 2" filters.
Eye relief is 17mm. The rubber eyecup can be stored folded down, especially for persons who wear glasses.
These threads are for attaching cameras directly to the eyepiece for astrophotography. By removing the rubber eyecup, you expose these threads. The M43 thread is primarily used for "eyepiece projection" with DSLR or dedicated astronomy cameras via the Hyperion M43/T-2 ring (#2958080). The SP54 thread is used for "afocal" imaging, where you attach a camera that has a non-removable lens.
The 24mm Hyperion has only one fixed focal length; the technical data and focal length table give no fine tuning ring values for it. No reason is given, so we do not guess one.
Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 24. On a telescope of 1000mm focal length it gives about 42x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio; at f/6 it is 4mm.
No. Baader's technical data lists the 5mm to 21mm in the parfocal group and the 24mm outside it, so expect to refocus when changing to or from the 24mm.
Hyperion 68° eyepieces can be used on Zeiss Diascope spotting scopes with the Baader Diascope bayonet 1.25" adapter (#2454500), and on Zeiss Harpia spotting scopes with the Baader Harpia 85/95 adapter (#2454511).
The winged rubber eyeshield of the Hyperion 68° eyepieces is ideal for binocular use. A binoviewer needs a pair of eyepieces of the same focal length; the body diameter is 58mm.
The slip protection of the Hyperion 24mm is a classic undercut: a groove in the barrel that keeps the eyepiece from sliding out if the clamp loosens.
